I was sitting at the bookstore today with the little one. We had just finished nursing and I was sitting her up and getting ready to move on. Some guy ran up to us out of nowhere clutching a crumpled piece of paper and a pen. He got WAY too close and my "red alert: psycho within 2 feet" alarms were starting to sound. He says, "can you do me a favor?" I replied "no" without even considering it, because I'm a hardass like that. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"> He said "please? I'm doing a scavenger hunt, and I need you to sign on the line!"<br><br>
I tried to read the paper but it was crumpled and his hand was moving so I couldn't see much. It had a bunch of legalese on it, including the standard "I, the undersigned agree to the terms and conditions" bla bla bla. I couldn't make out much other than that--clearly by signing it I would be agreeing to some terms and conditions. Obviously I did NOT sign it. I said "no" again and the guy got really mad. "PLEASE! WHY NOT??? Asshole!"<br><br>
And then he ran off. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/dizzy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Dizzy">:<br><br>
It seemed like either some kind of prank or scam or maybe even something more bizarre than my innocent little imagination can conceive of. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/loveeyes.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Loveeyes">: Anyone heard of something like this???

Umm - so the guy wouldn't even let you see what he wanted you to sign, and then he CALLED YOU A NAME? That is so bizarre - would have totally freaked me out. I'm glad he just ran off and didn't continue to harrass you.

Funny, that was the first thing DH thought of when I told him about the incident too! He was like, maybe it's some sinister "girls go wild: NIP edition" or something. Yeeech. I was skeptical because hey, if someone is going to secretly film you, would he really bother with a release form? But who knows...<br><br>
The really bizarre thing is when I say this guy "ran" up to us and "ran" off I mean it. He literally raced up out of nowhere and then raced away down the stairs. Seriously odd. I doubt it was really a scavenger hunt, at any rate, I've never heard of one of those that required legal releases. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/dizzy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Dizzy">:

With the running, though, and the seeming to be hyper, I might be inclined to believe him.<br><br>
If you sign a paper, but don't use your name or your regular sig -- like, just make something up -- does it still count as being your signature?<br><br>
Not that I would have signed it if I had psycho alarm bells going off, but if I really thought it was a guy in a scavenger hunt, I might have signed with a fake name.<br><br>
Maybe he just needed to trick someone into signing a crazy form, not necessarily get a certain demographic -- like a nursing mom -- and you were sitting in one place not doing much, so he figured you could sign.<br><br>
But, weird.

WEIRD!!! I've seen people doing scavenger hunts, and they always hand over the whole list. They want to you find a block that you can actually fill out. With any sort of weird vibes, I wouldn't want to have my attention split away from my kiddos.<br><br>
You did great though! Most women would be polite and try to feign interest, when wanting to say emphatically "NO!" I'm impressed that you kept your cool. I'm working on not getting flustered in situations like that.

If my first instinct was to find that person creepy or just weird/odd in anyway that makes me even mildly uncomfortable, I would have replied a quick no-nonsense "Sorry nope" and move right on as fast as I can, esp if my DD is with me. I wouldnt even have bothered to read what that was all about.
