So... I am in a bit of a decision making pinch. Right now my mom is taking care of my pigs for me, in another state(where we moved from a few months ago). I have a sow, a boar, and at the moment I have 9 just weaned little pigs. Thing is, my mom and step-dad are having a hard time of it... There are just too many. And then there is the financial aspect. Grain is THROUGH THE ROOF, and we just can't afford to feed extraneous mouths.

My boar was a poor quality, 'knock my sow up in a hurry' purchase. I don't mind seeing him go, as we can just AI in the future(I don't really want my sow bred back now anyway). Thing is I can't afford to, and neither do my parents want to, spend the time and money to castrate him and wait around for his meat to lose the "boar" taste. Frankly, I've never eaten a working boar... I don't know if it's tolerable, or nasty. My mom says I could have him turned entirely into sausage, and that would cover the taste. Thoughts or advice?

Also... Would you ever consider butchering and eating pigs as young as 8 weeks old? By that time they should be at or over 60 pounds. Paying the butcher and process fee would probably not be worth it for the amount of meat you leave with, but I figured we could do it at home(I've processed pigs myself, just prefer to have the meat packer do it). They aren't selling, and we have so much money in them already... But I don't even want to think about feeding so many pigs until they reach conventional butchering age, and I've got to get the numbers to a manageable place for my mom to take care of. Thoughts? Thanks so much for any advice... I've never really been put in a place where I've had to make choices outside of the routine raise and process cycle, and I just can't come up with anything satisfying.

ETA: I'm going to cross post in the Traditional Foods Forum(mods let me know if that's okay!).

Sell or kill them. Not sure how old pigs are for baby back ribs. I remember when in Hungary we would kill a pig in the spring or fall.Took all day to process the meats. My job was cleaning the guts, and stirring the vat of fat that was being cooked down.

The food that day was the best, but it was hard work to get all of that meat processed.Hardest part was killing the poor pig.

Post on craigs to sell or kill them asap.Keep a few.It will be up to mom what is easy, and up to you since you are paying for the feed.My family would just have 2 pigs and kill one every 6 months.I would think 4 is good since there is illnesss and death that could occur.
