It's my nephew. He's a lovely preteen who likes computers and Artemis Fowl and baseball and girls. My sister, his mother, says I am crazy to want to knit him something since he is very particular about what he will and will not wear. But I can't help it! I knit because I love.

He only wears athletic socks. The boys he's friends with all wear those surfer-brand beanies. I don't have time for a sweater. They live in Central Florida, so a scarf would be seldom worn, though a really cool one might be taken out a few times. He doesn't play with toys.

So I'm kind of talking myself out of this as I go along, but I'm curious, what would you knit?

what about a small drawstring bag? something with a cool motif, maybe even a bit felted....I'm thinking of something that boys might have carried marbles in, you know, like a crowne royal bag?

Definitely a beanie. (See the 17yo brother thread for my suggestion of WHICH. )

What about a pillow for his bed with a cool pattern on it or maybe his favorite teams logo or something like that. Or a book bag/messenger bad.

These are fantastic ideas! Thanks, mamas. I'll post a pic when I decide what to do and then do it!

I think Swell would be something he could use. I grew up in CF and just moved 2 years ago...even though its warm to everyone else we natives still freeze in the winter and use hats.

Swell is a really pretty hat, but the gauge in the pattern is WAY off. I knit with suggested yarn and needles and the resulting hat looks to be about the size for a 6 mo old.

This is a GREAT suggestion!

And I'd forgotten about Swell; that's the thing with Knitty patterns; there are so many good ones that it's hard to keep them all in your head!

I've made 3 Swells.

Make the size large for sure, and I used 8s. Even so, it was a tiny bit small for my BIL but fit my 9-year-old dd well.

My BIL might have just needed to give it a tug though. The medium (made with 8s too) fit my 4-year-old nephew well.
