So DD is super allergic to cows milk. She is breastfed. I am 9 months pregnant so she hasn't gotten my milk in a while and I am hoping that she will continue to nurse after this baby is born.

So we have been giving her goat's milk which she likes. It is super expensive and DH is I think seriously considering buying a goat for the milk. We have the property to keep one and our city would let us I am just not sure how to go about it.

Of course I have ALWAYS wanted a goat since I was little too!

Kolaiah is severely allergic to cow's milk, too, but he recently weaned so I've been trying him on goat milk and he seems to like it as well. I've never heard of anyone buying a goat just for the milk but I bet it would be more fun than a dog. :LOL

I grew up on a dairy farm and we plan on moving back that direction for our family since we drink goat milk.

first, allow me to guide you towards http://www.homesteading.com for great support and information toward your mini-homsteading

second, goats are herd animals and need company, so always have more than one for their needs.

third, goats are wonderful animals, some more sociable than others though. IMO and my personal favorite are the LaManchas, and at this point I'm considering Mini-Manchas, which is a cross of a LaMancha and a Nigerian so they are smaller, but still give a goodly sum of milk for the family. Their butterfat content is around that of the Nubian w/o the whining of the nubian
or the health issues (Nubians tend to be the most sensitive health wise of the goat breeds). Goat milk also makes the best imo yogurt and icecream mmmmmmmmm. There are many breeds out there, which make it hard to decide, but it's a fun journey.
