I accidently found this while searching for other info. I am wondering if the mutans strep colonizing is a cause of cavities? and how is it transferred from mom to baby? TIA

Effect of maternal use of chewing gums containing xylitol, chlorhexidine or
fluoride on mutans streptococci colonization in the mothers' infant children.

Yes, the mutans strep causes cavities.

And it is transferred by the occasional kiss, accidental spit, Mom blowing on spoon of food to cool it, normal talking, etc. And there may be some transfer during birth. If you wanted to try to prevent this transfer you could wear a face mask 24/7 around your baby. Not a practical idea.
