I'm wanting to knit a baby blanket for my new baby due in January (thinking of the blanket pattern in the SnB book). I want to use a fairly luxurious feeling yarn however I'm not sure which to choose. Would 100purewool make a nice blanket?

Or how about cascade 220?
I would stay away from any nonsuperwash wool for a baby blanket, unless you're good at spot cleaning. My kid was a big barfer.

I made the BBBB from SnB in Koigu, and it's $80 worth of lusciousness. I made a second one out of Lorna's Laces worsted, and it's $60 worth of lusciousness. This is a yarn-eating pattern, so I'd so with the cheapest yarn you can face using unless you just want to say f*** it (as I did, twice) and get what's pretty and soft.

Since you've actually used the Koigu for this pattern, is there another type of yarn you would recommend that is similar? I'm fairly new to knitting so haven't tried many different yarns yet. I'm not too concerned about price (although the max would probably be $80) or about spot cleaning.

the koigu looks gorgeous, but I don't enjoy knitting with it (the "hand" is too dry for me). It's doubled, so basicallly you're looking for a light worsted. If you don't double, you only use four skeins instead of eight.

I love knitting with Lorna's Laces Shepherd's Worsted, and also Mountain Colours' 4/8 worsted (which is what this baby blanket will be, if i ever get off my ass long enough to knit it). I like variegated wools for this pattern because it's VERY simple (I think boring, in some ways) and the yarn really shows off.

DB cashmerino. Anything made out of that makes me want to take it to bed (um, to sleep).

I was just looking at the DB cashmerino and was wondering if it would be a good option. I've been looking around online and have been having trouble finding online yarn stores that carry the yarns you've recommended. Almost all of the websites I came to were yarn stores that had websites just advertising their stores (weren't actually selling online). Any online stores you can suggest?

Crap. No, most of my yarn shopping is in person. I'd try the message boards at knitty.com ; they're very busy and yarn-centric.

I forgot to thank you again for your help maxmama. I just found some Lorna's Laces on ebay in the worsted. It is 4.1oz (225yds). The pattern calls for 8 skeins of the Koigu (50g/175yds) and you knit it double stranded. How much of the Lorna's Laces would I need since I won't be knitting it double stranded? Thanks again!

You could probably do it with three skeins, but I might order four just to be sure and return one if needed.

Have fun. It's really a no-brain pattern -- I used it for meetings and watching TV. But it's pretty cool when done, and a good size for swaddling!

Thanks again for all your help!! I think I'll go with 4 skeins just to be safe. Can't wait to start it!! I'm planning to have this project as my TV watching project and then I have a list as long as my arm of all the other things I want to knit for this baby!!
