I'm at the other side. Phew :) This is poorly written because I'm tired and haven't even debriefed about this yet. It's all very fresh and just flowing out.

I had some spotting Sunday morning - 41 weeks, took it as a good sign. Through the day I kept hoping to go into labor but instead i had a very boring day of sitting around willing my uterus to contract. I was very emotional and fed up.

DH went to put the kids to bed at like 9 and I started having contractions pretty much right away. In between I felt like there was no was in labor yet, but when I had a contraction it felt nice and tight. He fell asleep in their room and I got him out at 10 and while I was yelling at him for falling asleep, the midwife called. We decided to give it a half hour to see if my contractions pick up and then we'd call the midwife back. Because they really had only just started and I wasn't sure what was going to happen.

DH started filling the pool just in case. By 10.20 the pool was like 1/4 filled and I was already having more intense contractions and I wanted to get in already, so I did! The water cooled down so DH turned off the hose and put on pots of water to boil and he called the midwife to say, "you'd better come through".

I lost track of time. I felt a bit silly in the pool at first, like I was making a big deal out of nothing. But they started picking up. And then things started to get serious. I started low moaning through contractions, and then as it got more intense, I started making a weird roaring/yelling noise with my mouth wide open. I started feeling pushy and asked DH to wake our eldest daughter.

He brought her through and she was super sleepy. She started filming, I started pushing and yelling, It took a good few pushes for the baby's head to come down far enough. Then I felt the ring of fire and tried to pant. I felt like I was going to pass out at one point because I couldn't stop to take a breath, my body just took over and I pushed real hard.

At 11.25pm out came the head and I wanted to scream with delight. I announced, "the head is out". I reached down to feel for a cord, but the baby was still in the caul. I tried to rip it open with my fingers, instinctively, but it wasn't coming open. And then came another contraction and out slid the body. I was SO happy. I scooped up my baby and he was screaming right away. My daughter started asking, "check if it's a brother or a sister"

I took a moment to catch my breath and kiss my baby's head and then I checked. And it was a brother. :) So I've had 4 girls and now 2 boys. :) Everyone was thrilled. My eldest woke her sister and she came through to see her new brother.

I tried to nurse him but he wasn't latching on well. I had a really sore contraction and out came the placenta. I tried to stand up but some of the placenta was retained and it all started falling apart. Eventually it all detatched and we scooped it in a bowl and I got out of the tub. As soon as we got in bed, the midwife and assistant arrived. They checked us all over and it was all buzz for a while. He started nursing like an old pro once we were in bed.

They've left now, kids are back in bed and I am exhausted and ready to go to sleep.

His name is Alasdair Rennie

He's 9lb 2oz

22.5 inches

I am in love with him. I'm SO over the moon right now.

We think all the placenta is out, I passed more pieces within an hour, but were keeping an eye on it all to make sure. I've been a little light headed but otherwise ok.

I am SO glad to have my handsome, adorable baby boy here snuggling beside me.

I'm totally on a birth high. Life is awesome.

We haven't made many announcements yet to friends etc. We'll wait til morning but I wanted to tell you ladies! :)
