My intact son has his 6 month well baby visit tomorrow, but I wanted to post my question here before asking the doc. DS pulls on his penis at every opportunity, which I know is normal, but I mean he really yanks on it. The tip has been red lately. (don't know which came first, red tip or penis yanking???) Could he possibly be trying to itch a yeast infection? (He has had an antibiotic cream for a heavy bacterial infection in his eyes, breastmilk was not clearing it up)

When my son was 2 he developed a yeast infection. It hurt to pee and he was very swollen from the base to the tip of his penis. He also had a discharge seeping out of his foreskin.

One day he was fine and the next day when we changed his morning diaper he was swollen with the discharge and complained it hurt when he would urinate.

It could be a yeast infection but unless he's had any other symptoms I'd just wait and see what happens over the next day or two.

Honestly, from what you say it sounds like he is exploring his body. Ds plays with his parts every diaper change too. I don't think eye ointment would result in a yeast infection, that's usually the oral antibiotics. You can try giving him baby probiotics - it's not going to hurt in any case.

Make sure the doctor does not touch or try to retract him at all. That might create an infection and trauma.

If there is something wrong it will get worse fast. I wouldnt talk to the dr about it unless you know for sure that he/she wont touch it.

It really doesn't sound like much, and even if it were a yeast infection, I wouldn't trust most US Drs to not make a mountain out of a mole hill withh any issue in volving foreskins.

Theoretically he may have rubbed his eye then his penis, transfering some of the ointment and cuasing a yeast over growth. I would just keep an eye on it to see if it gets worse, if it does tart by just putting a bit of yogurt on it.

my son started doing this at this age and hasn't stopped, so be prepared for this.

No wonder the 'puritans' decided to cut the genitals of boys and girls back in the days

Thanks so much for your responses. I knew posting here would make me feel better. Sometimes you know in your gut the answer, but it's nice to have others back you up and keep you down to earth! I'm reading them this morning before the appointment and feel that I will not mention it to the doc, especially since DS was not red this morning... must have been all that yanking

Antibiotic ointment in the eyes would not disturb the natural flora of the penis.

Safe to say it is probably NOT a yeast infection. Redness at the tip is normal. During childhood the foreskin goes through separation and itching, irritation, redness, minor swelling, ballooning, smegma pearls are all normal.

By playing with himself he is probably just causing some separation, nothing to worry about.

By the way, make sure to remind the pediatrician NOT to manipulate his foreskin in any way, shape or form (BEFORE the diaper comes off).
