I posted the following in Health and Healing and got pretty much no response.

I have a mild yeast infection I'd like to kill. I have the following items, how much should I use and for how long? I'm 27 weeks pg and m/w saw signs of a yeast infection early on, it's been mild with intermittent itching. Wanting to knock it before having the baby.

Garlic cloves
grapefruit seed extract
tea tree oil

If I made a douche, how do I do that? Any use in soaking a tampon with diluted gse? How many days to use garlic?

I'm sorry you have to deal with this mama- I HATE yeast infections. I have never used GSE and tea tree burns me but I know people use it diluted on a tampon. The garlic cloves usually take 3+ days for me and I find them uncomfortable. What I really find effective is to douche with diluted hydrogen peroxide at least 2x day. Also douching with L. acidophilis has always been great for me- essentially dissolve 1/2 caplet in warm water and then douche. Plain yogurt frozen in tampon applicators works too, but I find it too messy.

Good luck!

What do you use to make a douche? A squeeze bottle? How much do you dilute it? Thanks!

taking the garlic internally will also help. I crush a clove then cut it up into little pieces and swallow them with water like pills. 1-3 cloves a day. And i did the clove suppository every night. I kept doing both things until symptoms were gone. I don't know anything about the GSE or TTO.

I've not tried the GSE or tea tree oil. I had an AWFUL yeast infection for a long time this pregnancy-- I was trying to treat it with garlic but it didn't help fully. I ended up treating it with an over-the-counter remedy... not the solution of my choice, but it worked, finally. I'd be interested to hear if the essential oils are more effective than the garlic!

ETA: I've successfully used garlic in the past, it just wouldn't do the trick this time around; I'm guessing maybe b/c of the pregnancy.

Thanks. I'll try that garlic method. If worse came to worse, I have a filled RX on hand that I can use. I'll try other things first (though how do you know if it's completely gone? no more itching I guess?).

This may be silly, but works great- my vet gave us these large syringes for forcing the pets to take liquid meds. I had extras and tried them out- work perfect! I think a squeeze bottle would be fine too.

For dilutions, I just kind of wing it, maybe 2-3 tbsps of hydrogen peroxide to 1 cup of water. HP is made by our vaginal flora to eat yeast and bacteria anyway, so it wont hurt you. I forgot that vinegar (I use apple cider) helps to ease external itching too- but dilute them same as above or it stings a little. You can use vinegar internally too.

Bottom line- make your vagina acidic and help your own flora to clear out the invaders. I usually treat at least one day after the symptoms are gone.

I've specifically looked in Shonda Parker's "Naturally Healthy Pregnancy" for the answer to your question and I forgot what I read! She did write that douching is not recommended during pregnancy and that a bath would be better. She also wrote that drinking apple cider vinegar, like Braggs with the mother in it, is helpful, which is the route I've taken before.

For relief of discomfort, I douse a pad with plain yogurt and wear it for a few hours (changing teh yogurt every so often).

I've had a milk continuous yeast infection for about 4 months now of this pregnancy (about 29 weeks now). Here's what I'm doing:

garlic cloves inserted internally (I like to thread a string through it)
saturate tampon with yogurt and insert
eat yogurt
eat homemade sourkraut
large amounts of probiotic capsules
beet kvass (fermented drink)
washing clothes with vinegar
no undies at night

The truth of it is, if I give up my whole wheat sourdough bread products then it is mild. I absolutely cannot have ANY sugar. Even when I have fruit it sticks around mildly. If I really want to kick this thing I know I have to give up all fruits and the sweeter veggies (potatoes, carrots etc).

It's really annoying and I haven't been able to fully give up fruit yet, which is why it's still hanging around the tiniest bit. Sigh.

Good luck!

Just thought of another one (can you tell I've had a yeast infection before? ) Boric acid caplets. You can make them yourself if your coop doesnt carry them- just fill up size 00 gel caps with straight boric acid and insert morning and night. These take about 3-5 days to do the trick, so I usually supplement with HP and vinegar.

FWIW, my OB had no problems with boric acid or vinegar/HP douches. As I said before, your good flora produce HP (H3O3- exactly the same) to fight infections. A concern about douching would be to blow air up your birth canal or to introduce another nasty pathogen. Just make sure you use clean instruments!
