Yeast related rash - diet changes?

DS (2yo) had a pretty bad rash on his legs and diaper area which is going away after the Dr said to use Lotriman (anti-fungal) cream. Now I'm left wondering why this happened in the first place. I make yogurt at home (24 hr) and he loves that so I know he's getting some probiotics in his diet. He doesn't eat refined flours of any sort. But he does like sweet things and has a predisposition towards them but I don't give him refined sugars. Also, he started drinking kombucha, and I wanted to ease him into it but he can chug a whole bottle down if I let him. Could too much kombucha in the beginning be the reason?

I'm really confused as to where to start - because I don't want this becoming a problem for him later on down the line. I know a lot of you have struggled with yeast issues so how did you start your healing?

We're struggling with candida overgrowth over here.

First of all...I've read a lot that rashes aren't always a bad thing. If he's started drinking kombucha it could just be detox. The body often detoxes through the skin.

Ds has had horrible issues with extreme diaper area ouchies. We think it's candida related. The whole family is starting an anti-candida diet. We had actually already given up grains for a while so we just gave up sugar and nuts. Then we're going to ease off fruit.

We're also adding tons of probiotic to our diet. Fermented, kefir, yogurt etc etc.

This yahoo groups has TONS of info

Bee is pretty TF too

We also decided to get some things from Dr. Ron's to help. Dh, ds and I will be taking these things (ds at 1/2 dose)
Yeast Formula
Doc's friendly Flora

(it's all under the product list)

As far as healing goes....you may want to check the Healing the Gut thread in Health and Healing. I think that when the candida die off they can leave holes that need to be repaired. From what I can remember.....

lots of probiotic
digestive enzymes
bone broths are extremely healing
Dr. Ron recommends raw milk. If you're worried about the lactose, raw milk kefir would be great

Hope that helps.

The weather has been getting hotter and this can make yeast overgrowth more likely in the diapers.

Have you considered drying the dipes out in the sun? That's made a huge difference in DD's number of rashes. Also, coconut oil has worked really well over here for yeast type rashes though DD's don't get nearly that bad since the drying diapers in the sun business.

It can be from the kombucha and it can be that candida has finally overwhelmed given his like of sweets. Given how you've not had this problem before, I'd suggest easing up on the kombucha and reintroducing it a few ounces at a time and if the rashes keep up, then look at sugar and other environmental factors (my neighbor's DS gets a yeast like rash every time he eats peas, go figure).

The heat and diapers can certainly make things worse. The yeast is always around in the air and on our skin, too, (I think...), so any sort of opening like a regular diaper rash can let the yeast take hold.

The pea thing is probably a food intolerance--causes the classic "target" rash on the bottom and the yeast take hold. That would be my guess. My kids have had their share of intestinal issues, so I'm too familiar with yucky rashes.

The other advice is great, too! (I will keep the coconut oil in mind--I've never used that on a diaper area before, but it makes sense!).

Hmmm, sorry if this sounds really dumb on my part... but how do I tell if it's a candida issue and need to cut back on sweets/grains or if it's just the kombucha and heat? If I cut back a little on the kombucha and it doesn't happen again does that mean it's not candida?

Yeah, I don't think there is a better way than experimentation. That's how I figured out that DD is sensitive to dairy and cranberry juice - she'd get a rash if I had a glass of milk and nurse her soon after.

Easiest would be to cut back on the kombucha and see if the rash disappears then reintroduce and see if it reappears. Sometimes it happens quickly!
