When she grows taller than the top slots, do I need to move her to a belt-positioning booster? Does it matter where her head is in relation to the top of the seat?

Correct, a car seat is outgrow when
one of the following criteria are met:
Over weight limit
Shoulders are above the top harness slots
Tops of ears are level with the top of the seat's shell.
Once your DD's shoulders are above the harness slots she is too big for the Marathon even if her ears are below the top of the shell. Unfortunaely, the Marathon's manual is not clear on this, but numerous people have called Britax to confirm this. Bummer your DD only lasted until 4 in the seat, Britax actually states 49" as the maximum height and both my DD and DS would have almost made it 49" in the MA (if they had been in one!).
