In general my hips are not bothering me. However, I have been trying to sleep on my left side most of the time. It seems like that only works for a few hours before I wake up in pain. I usually then switch to my right side, but that usually ends up hurting too. Really, I just want to sleep on my back. Sometimes I wake up like that, anyway. I've tried putting a pillow behind me but I must move it in my sleep. So, my questions: 1) Is it really that big of a deal to sleep on your left side instead of on your back? 2) For those of you who have managed to master side-sleeping, what do you do to keep your hips from hurting?

Hi, not in your DDC, but saw your post. I have had a lot of hip pain/back issues. My favorite thing is a body pillow... long. I lay on my side, cuddle the top with my arms and then the other half goes between my knees. This prevents a lot of my hip/pelvis pain. It took a while to get used to it, but I love it now. I can even get my belly to be supported too.
Sometimes, I wedge a flat pillow under my torso and hip when I lay on my side (on the side I am not laying on). Then when i want to turn over, I relax into the pillows.
My husband calls the body pillow "the other man" ! Hope this helps.
The most important thing is that you get some sleep. It is best to be on the left side, so the baby is getting the optimal blood flow, however, sleep and rest are mega important too. Listen to your body and you will know.

When I was pregnant with dd I always ended up on my back during the night and she was fine. I've always heard that you would start feeling bad before lying on your back would hurt the baby.

This pg I manage to stay on my sides, but I have to switch sides often during the night. The thing that helps my hips is to use a king sized pillow (a body pillow would work too) and throw my top leg over it and keep my bottom leg straight (ish). I'm kind of on the front of my bottom leg and my belly is resting on the bed. This is the most comfortable position for my hips.

I always end up on my back with my legs up. I guess I'm just used to sleeping on my back. I suppose it isn't a problem since I feel fine-and seems so are the rest of you too
Personally i think if you are comfortable on your back then try it out for awhile.

I agree with the other ladies - if your back is comfy, sleep on your back.
That said, I am a tummy sleeper who is finally uncomfy enough on her tummy to have switched to her side, and I've found that a feather bed helps immensely. I have a body pillow, too, and that helps a bit, but the feather bed takes some of the pressure off the joints, and makes for a much more comfortable sleep. It won't work if you have little ones in bed with you, of course, but might be worth a try otherwise.

i second the body pillow thing. It works very well for me and manages to keep the hip pain at bay. (at least while I am sleeping)
