I recently decided to switch to organic milk... I really would like to do raw milk, but that's not an option until at least September, so organic it is for now. I didn't want to go driving to every grocery store in town to find it, so I went to Trader Joe's because I knew they would have some.

$5.29 for a gallon!
:

When we do our regular grocery run next week I'm going to look for organic milk at the "normal" store and hopefully it will be cheaper, but oh boy...

ETA: One good thing about the Trader Joe's visit was that they also had Kefir, which I only just heard of, so I got some of that as well to try before I decide if I want to start making my own. It's not bad! It's like zingy yogurt, just slightly thinner.

I hate to mention it since I know it is the bain of all evil, but when we were living in the states we could get organic milk at Wal-Mart and our local grocery store--it was way cheaper!

Organic milk is *so* expensive. I've been buying milk that isn't organic, but is hormone and antibiotic free, comes from a farm that's sort of local -- about 2 hours away -- and treats their cows nice. (I've visited.) It's still outrageously expensive.

We are just now looking at switching to raw milk. To my great surprise, it will be a significant cost savings for us. Even if we just used the milk for drinking and yogurt it would be cheaper, but when you add in the cream, from which I will make butter, it's a super good deal. Hopefully the same will be true for you come this fall.

Yeah, organic milk is outrageously expensive. It's between $7.50 and $8.50 per gallon in the local grocery stores, depending upon which one you shop at. I can get local, raw, non-certified organic milk for $5 per gallon, so raw is actually a significant savings for us, too. And as a PP mentioned, we get more than milk out of that, as I make my own butter, yogurt, sour cream, cream cheese, kefir, etc.

I think it depends upon which part of the country you live as to the price of organic milk, or just groceries in general. I also think that prices for everything are especially high right now, with gas prices the way they are, but that organics are probably even more so as they are almost all trucked in. Sad, huh?

I try to buy organic, or hormone/pesticide free, those items that are staples in our diet. Since organic milk is so expensive I compromise and buy hormone/AB free milk and just use a lot less of it. Now I pretty much only use it for cooking and in my coffee. (But then dd1 drinks powdered goat's milk b/c of allergy to casein, so there goes my savings!)

Organic milk in the store I frequent here in Hawaii is priced at $4.99 for a gallon. It's not a bad price for our area. I'm sure it's expensive to some of you but milk here goes for $7.69 at times!
: That is regular milk not organic so you can imagine how happy I was to have found this reasonably priced organic milk.

We lived in Hawaii when I was young (I went to school there from K to 2). My dad has always quipped that beer was less expensive than milk. I guess he wasn't exactly joking...
