I'm having trouble with the link, but I get the gist. What an opportunity for civil disobedience - except, of course, for the babies.
I'm angry about this.

How is it legal to ban breastfeeding on the subway? I thought breastfeeding was legal in all 50 states regardless of whether or not there was legislation *protecting* that right.

Sounds like some subway employees need a little educating...

i bf on the subway, about 6 years ago, and one of the MTA employees, who was off duty but still in uniform, VERY LOUDLY (so the whole car could hear) exclaimed, "OH MY GOD, THAT'S SO DISGUSTING."

You have this backwards. The NYC subway is not federal property. The Congresswoman was instrumental in passing legislation guaranteeing the right to breastfeed on federal land.

I assume that the tickets were for indecent exposure.

Yes, but NY'ers have the LEGAL protection to breastfeed in public.

N.Y. Civil Rights Law § 79-e (1994) permits a mother to breastfeed her child in any public or private location. (SB 3999)

I'm sure they had Rep Maloney there because she would draw the media and is a huge supporter of bf rights.

Ok, I emailed this to Fox News:

Quote:
Your news article (http://www.myfoxny.com/myfox/pages/H...Y&pageId=1.1.1) this evening about mothers being arrested for breastfeeding on New York City subways is disturbing. And, I'd like to know exactly for what reason they were arrested? Because there were serving a beverage in an open container? It can't be for indecent exposure, for two reasons:

1) breastfeeding is not indecent exposure, and this is protected by law (see http://lalecheleague.org/Law/Bills30.html)

2) being topless on the subway is not illegal, and this is also protected by law: see http://www.uslaw.com/dumb_new_york_laws.html but also, I quote:

Quote:
"The New York City Transit Authority has ruled that women can ride the city subways topless. New York law dictates that if a man can be somewhere without a shirt, a woman gets the same right. The decision came after arrests of women testing the ordinance on the subways. A transit police spokesman said they would comply with the new rule, but "if they were violating any other rules, like sitting on a subway bench topless smoking a cigarette, then we would take action."

Quote:
"New York: Citizens may not greet each other by "putting one's thumb to the nose and wiggling the fingers". It is illegal for a woman to be on the street wearing "body hugging clothing." You may not smoke within 100 feet of the entrance to a public building. Women may go topless in public, providing it is not being used as a business."

Would you please clarify in a follow-up article this information for riders of the NYC subway, as well as indicate exactly why these women were ticketed and by whom? (subway workers? NYC police? National Guared???)

Thank you!

I nursed my 3 to 5 year old for 3 years on the NY subway, from Sratan Island to Brooklyn, to Queens, to Manhattan.

Of course, he never cried or complained on all our long rides to work/back home; quiet as can be...

What the??????

As many obscene things that go on on the subway and they even think about banning breastfeeding???This is totally insance. (By the way...if a man can go without a shirt...why not a woman? The added fat mass should not make a difference....
