I got a summons in the mail today and called the number as I read the fine print about excuses from jury duty... it SAID that BF was a valid excuse but I was ready for a fight...<br><br>
They answer the phone, I say "Hi, I am currently breastfeeding an.."<br>
and she cuts me off and says "OK, give me your jury number and you are excused, have a nice day"<br><br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/winner.jpg" style="border:0px solid;" title="BFSymbol"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/winner.jpg" style="border:0px solid;" title="BFSymbol"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

I know! I got my summons when I was still nursing my little one.<br>
They also, according to another mama I know, excuse if you are homeschooling.

Yep! I have been excused from jury duty for that reason. It states it as a reason to be excused on the summons. You have to read the fine print<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/winky.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Wink">

I can top this! :)<br><br>
At my county court breastfeeding is an automatic excuse, but if you want to serve, they have lactation rooms in the courthouse so that you can take pumping breaks!

That is AWESOME, shmoo!<br><br>
But I can't imagine why you would do it if you didn't have to... <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">

Isn't that a relief? I got summoned twice during ds's three and a half years of nursing. The second time I wondered if his age would cause an issue but it never came up!

That's so great! I wish I'd known to just call instead. But I too was ready for a fight. So I toted my 10 day old baby to the courthouse, and instead of a year's continuance like last time the lady said she was going to give me 3 years off and to "get that beautiful baby out of this disgusting place!"

My mom was excused in the early 1990's because she was a single mom. She did have other child care arrangements she could have used (I was in daycare after school every day anyways) but they still excused her!

My state is awesome!* <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/banana.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="banana"> My mom hasn't been on jury duty EVER... she breastfed and they just said as long as you are, you're excused. Then she started a child care center in her home so it would put a couple dozen families in need of alt care arrangements and they just won't call her <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"><br><br>
(*Also, CA was one of the first to not pay for circ through state insurance and has a fairly low circ rate comparative to the US. And there's yoga at every corner from here to where I work, <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">)

I'd do it if I had pumping breaks...<br><br>
My employer makes up the difference between jury pay and my usual pay without me taking leave. I think it would be very interesting to be on a jury.

Isn't it great? I've been summoned 4-5 times since dd#1 was born and well was breastfeeding the whole hmm 6 years (with dd#2 now). I didn't know about the homeschooling exemption though. Its good to know in case dd#2 decides to wean... in a couple of years! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

I must be the only person in America who *doesn't* want to get out of jury duty, and is always pissed when they don't pick me to serve.<br><br>
I always figure that if I (or somebody I cared about) was on trial for something, I'd want the jury to consist of people OTHER than men and women who weren't smart enough to con their way out of serving. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/wink1.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="wink1"><br><br>
I guess I'm nuts, though. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

I actually enjoyed jury duty last time I served (3 years ago)<br><br>
but I am nursing a newborn so I had to get out of it...<br><br>
the clerk actually said "OK, I'll put you down as available for jury duty again in Feb 2008"<br><br>
I DIDN'T say (but thought) "I'll probably be nursing then, too"<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">
