Anyone who has taken Vitex - what effect has it had on your cycle? Right now my luteal phase is consistently around 6 days so I'm looking for ways to lengthen it.

I took Vitex and EPO and my LP lengthened within two cycles. It had been consistently around nine days for many, many months.

My DD is a Vitex baby, we think. (My husband also started Synthroid 2 mo. earlier...so it could be that too) But, it helped regulate my cycles, give me a longer LP. I also used Natural Prog. Cream too, but when I added the Vitex, I O'ed earlier and had longer LP's.

Thanks for the input mamas! I have the capsules right now, I'll look for the tincture next time I'm at the HFS.

I don't know if anyone on this board is using Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Tonic. It contains vitex as well as other good herbs.

After a miscarriage and 2 cycles of clomid followed by 2 ectopic pregnancies we were told we would probably never have our own children naturally. They recommended that we move directly to IVF.

I took this tonic for 6-8 weeks (I can't remember exactly how long), and became pregnant. My DS #1 is 2 1/2 now and very healthy.

When I started to feel like it was time for anotherone, and realizing it could tak years to conceive again, I took the tonic a second time. 2 months later I was pregnant again, with DS #2. He is now 7 months old and very healthy.

I will post the recipe below. I had no trouble finding the ingredients, except for rehmania. I substituted an equal part of red raspberry leaf tonic.

This was a god-send for us. I hope, if you try it, that it works for you too.

"Rosemary Gladstar, in "Herbal Healing for Women" (available at Richters) recommends a good diet and healthy lifestyle as prerequisites for fertility, especially when there is a problem such as scarring. In her experience, herbs help heal the reproductive organs, balance hormone levels and restore overall health and vitality.

She suggests a herbal tonic of:
4 parts rehmania (a Chinese blood tonic),
1 part astragalus root (immune stimulant),
1 part dong quai (a good general female tonic),
2 parts false unicorn root (uterine tonic),
3 parts wild yam root (contains a sex hormone precursor)and
1 part vitex berries (hormone balancing).

As a tincture, she recommends taking one fourth of a teaspoon of this mixture 3 times a day.

In addition, she recommends taking 2 capsules of dong quai 3 times a day except during menstruation, and Liquid Floradix Iron with herbs, following the dosage on the bottle. These recommendations apply to men as well, substituting the dong quai by ginseng in the formula and taking 2 capsules of ginseng a day in place of the dong quai capsules.

Warning for those with normal LPs - Vitex gave me a luteal cyst resulting in a 47 day LP. For the short-LP crowd, I think it's great!

If anyone wants 1/2 a bottle of GNC Vitex, PM me. I won't be taking it again.

Not to be negative, but in the interest of fairness, you should here all sides.....I heard GREAT things about Vitex, and excitedly used it....it actually made my problems WORSE. Also made me feel bad/sick. I went on to find out i have PCOS and thyroid issues, and finally used conventional fertility treatment to conceive. I do hope it works for you, but if it seems like it isn't, or it seems like it is making you sick, I just want to suggest you stop using it and try something else..I made myself sick for many months before finally stopping it...gee, I'm brilliant, right? LOL!

The combination of Vitex all cycle (4-6 of the 200 mg pills per day) and natural progesterone cream after O (1/2 to 1 tsp twice daily) worked really well for me, got pg very quickly!

I started taking Vitex but had to discontinue using it because it started making me feel very sick and started making me feel very very depressed and angry. I hope it works for you!

I have a short LP (10 days) and a short cycle (24 days). I took Vitex and it didn't work for me. It made me O a day or so earlier but kept my LP the same, which meant I was having 22 and 23 day cycles. I think it works best for those with long cycles but short LPs.

I concur. I took Vitex for one cycle in order to O earlier (I was O-ing around day 22-25). My LP was fine at 14 days but I was tired of the long cycles. The month I took Vitex, my LP was incredibly long...something like 20 days. So, I agree with the rest of the pp: Vitex is a wonderful tool for lengthening the LP or for regulating annovulatory/PCOS cycles. For those of you with somewhat regular cycles, try something less powerful and more tonic like RR leaf or red clover. Vitex balances the hormones which is a godsend for some, but not for those who don't need that kind of help.

I also remember someone saying that women who have depression as a PMS symptom shouldn't take Vitex. Try supplementing with B complex and extra B6 instead.

p.s. I Rosemary Gladstar, but have always felt a bit anxious about her fertility tonic as Susun Weed states that Wild Yam is an herbal contraceptive. Maybe it works differently in conjunction with the other herbs in the tonic? Any thoughts?

2 months ago i stopped the mini pill to TTC #2, no#1 took 11 months and the whole time my hormones where CRAZY,i was so nervous about going through that again but I take Femaprin, which is Vitex, and I have been feeling great and my cycle is somewhat normal, a bit long, but I am ovulating. I really can tell the difference it has made

I have 9 or 10 day LP's. My midwife recommended vitex and i used it in my last two pregnancies. I got pregnant the first month i started using it in both cases. I use the tincture and took 40 drops orally once a day starting after I ovulated. When I got my BFP, I tapered the dose and went off of it in about 10 days.

I don't know if this is what made the difference for me. But my charts looked good each month we were TTC, except for shortish LP's.

Though I am not yet TTC (just getting my charts as pretty as possible before we do) I can say that my first four charts were truly depressing. Mainly short LP (generally 4 to 7 days long--or short I should say). At the beginning of cycle 4 I made a few changes, so don't know which worked or if they all did. I take a chasteberry vitex supplement with 200 mg chasteberry extract and 300 mg chasteberry all month except during AF, I started completely blacking out our bedroom at night, I added a little extra zinc supplement (50 mg) and I got real serious about taking a tablespoon of cod liver oil daily.

Cycle 4 was still pretty ugly, but by 5 (and now 6, 7, 8, and part of 9) I am Oing around day 16/17 of 29/30 day cycles with CF looking pretty good (next project) and temps all in the right places.

Wish I could share charts but I am a paper and pencil kind of girl!

(BTW, I think this thread is giving some really great insight into what kinds of 'cases' it helps and what kind it hurts!)
