I would need more details to form an opinion. If they really weren't given an opportunity to console their child, then that is horrible and the airline should be ashamed. I think 5 or 10 minutes would not be an unreasonable amount of time to ask for to calm your child. But if they WERE given plenty of time to calm down the child, and she wasn't calming down, I respect their decision. A whole runway can't close because a 3 year old won't sit in her seat. If it were my child, I would have been grateful to get off the plane and been reimbursed and flown home later.
