How in the world is that an acceptable comment to make to someone? I am only 29 weeks but have been told repeatedly that there is no way I will make it through December without giving birth. I'm due at the very end of December darnit! I haven't gained too much weight, am measuring spot on according to the midwife, so what the heck?<br><br>
Is anyone else being told by total strangers that they are huge? Does this mean I'm having a big baby or is everyone just totally insensitive? I'm short - 5'2" so maybe that's it. I just had to vent!!!

Last weekend, my DBF and I were visiting a friend that had just had his 2nd child. Pretty much everyone that was there asked me if I was almost due, and were shocked when I told them that I'm not due till December.<br><br>
I don't think I look that big. But, I'm also petite (5'3") and I think maybe that has something to do with it. Like, the belly size is relative to height? I dunno...I do have a short torso, so baby has no choice but to grow horizontal now that I'm running out of space vertically. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/shrug.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="shrug">:

I'm 5'2". And from what I have observed, yes, height tends to make a difference. Belly just pops more, kwim?

Short people look "more" pregnant to ignorant people, I think. Everyone carries differently, but people who've never actually had a baby or seen a pregnant woman outside of movie stars have no clue.<br><br>
Ironically, I get the opposite comments, and honestly, I've gained more weight than the "average" preg. (I'm 5'1, and it's all belly for me, and I'm waddling already)<br><br>
I guess it's different for me altogether since I've worked in a children's resale shop for the past 6 years - always around preg women.<br><br>

p.s. here's me at 42w3d last pregnancy, 2 days before she was born: <a href="http://www.pigvig.net/molly.html" target="_blank">http://www.pigvig.net/molly.html</a>

I get the same thing, all the time, both pregnancies now. SUre you're not having twins?, ha. ha. I have NEVER heard that one before, thanks a lot.<br><br>
I am 5'4" but actually long-torsoed (short legged!) but who knows maybe bellies do look bigger on shorties. I just think people don't know what to say to you so they feel the need to comment on the belly. Although I am about 30 weeks and I noticed in my yoga class I definitely stick out further than many of the other girls who are 35+ weeks.<br><br>
I think part of it is just how you carry. Part of it is people don't know what a full-term pregnancy looks like or they don't know what to say. And part of it is people are unintentionally rude and stupid<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/wink1.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="wink1"> I went to church Sunday and had 3 different people say "you look like you're ready to pop any second!" with a gleeful tone. Yeah, thanks, I have 10 weeks to go, at least.<br><br>
And on top of that I went almost 3 weeks past my EDD with DS, so imagine how huge I looked then.

At 4'11" I am carrying larger than life, too. I have had a couple of people remark that they can't believe I am only 8 months. AND, what's weird, is that I really only got BIG BIG BIG a couple of weeks ago--I just popped!

People are weird and they forget what a normal full term pregnancy looks like. When I was about 25 weeks even my dh was like - woah are there twins in there? So annoying! Full term pregnancies look BIG people - when all we see are the fake maternity bellies on tv I think that we lose sight of the true look of pregnancy which is big - in belly, face, arms, legs, everywhere.

This is exactly why I'm so glad I no longer work with certain people. A mother who just thought she knew it all, and annoyed the crap out of me told me for weeks I'd have my first son....soon. "Soon" eventually was 40 weeks 3 days. She's gone. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/joy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="joy">:<br><br>
The other day some guy walked by me and said, "you 'bout ready to have that baby?!" Um no, it's not even <i>close</i> to being developmentally ready, and I'd prefer my baby to have a better brain than yours! Thank. you. very. much!

I feel bad we all have to hear this but I'm glad it's not just me!! I was feeling like a house this weekend because we were at a family event and EVERYONE felt the need to comment on my size.<br><br>
The icing on the cake was the woman who asked if I was having a c-section. I had to ask her to repeat herself. I still can't figure out why in the world she asked me that! The multiple "you're not going to try to go natural are you" comments were also just so special. Ugh! I'm going to hibernate until my baby is here and only emerge to go to work every day.

I don't think it is just the short women who get that sort of wonderful comment..I am 5'10" and I have been hearing it now for weeks...<br><br>
And I wasn't even that big until the past few weeks..now I am big (my belly is pretty large) and I do have larger babies but still.. Why even ask a woman if she is having twins (or "Are you sure there is only one in there?!") or tell her she will not make it until her due month..geesh.

I am 25 weeks pregnant and started to show at about 12 weeks. This is my first baby and I am only 5'1". People are asking me when I'm due like it's supposed to happen any day now. I think it's just part of being short. Where else is all that baby stuff supposed to go?

Oh yeah, and I posted a picture of myself at 16 weeks pregnant. My mom said that when she first saw it (she lives in a different state from me) she wondered if I was having twins. Thanks, mom!

Ugh - what a rude comment! It's sort of like the "bet you want the epidural" comments - telling someone they/their body can't do it. Would they tell a 1st trimester mom they bet she'll miscarry? Prematurity isn't funny.<br>
Anyway, I really do think it's true that people are ignorant about how pregnant women actually are supposed to look. I'm 5'9', have a long torso, and am 31 weeks - last week, I got "you look too small" and "you're not due until <i>December</i>?" comments in the very same day. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/eyesroll.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="roll">

I showed early(4 weeks), and at 2 months my MIL swore to me..in front of everyone, that I was "too big to be only having one." I think she got a kick out of telling everyone how big I was. (She is a very showy and "perfect" kind of person.) BTW...I'm 5'8" and the only place you can tell that I am pg is my belly...I carry my fat cells well lol.<br><br>
Now I get the " You are tiny for only 7 months!" I got that so many times this last month. Now lets see what they say when I get in my last 10 weeks...lol when I BLOW up.

I guess it's because pregnancy is a temporary condition that people suddenly feel welcome to comment on your body when you're pregnant, but not when you're not.<br><br>
It's really rude, though. It happens to me all the time, too. I'm small-boned and 5'2" (though not that thin at the moment!), so my belly expands pretty impressively.<br><br>
I guess even people who have had babies don't always know how large preggo-bellies can get -- it looks a lot less impressive when you're looking down at yourself than when you see someone else.<br><br>
I was just as big with my 7 1/2-pound baby as with my 9-pounder. You can't tell from the outside at all.<br><br>

I think people just have no clue how big pregnant bellies can get, or how small they can stay...there is just a lot of variation and if you aren't exactly how people picture it you get comments. Its silly, no one has ever given birth because their belly got too big, people have had bellies large enough that they need a sling to carry them around and still go to 42 weeks.

Another 4'11" mom here. My neighbor, who is really very sweet, said the same thing to me the other day. I don't mind her so much, but when I was still working when pregnant with my first, everyone in the office was so certain that I wouldn't make it to my due date and commented on it daily. My boss even gave me a Halloween bib at my office shower even though I wasn't due until Nov. 11 because she was so sure I would be two weeks early. I left work at 35 weeks due to BP issues (ended up being induced at 40w3d), but I don't think I could have stood the comments if I had stayed any longer.

I was in a shop with my Mum the other day for an hour and a half! I swear she tried on everything that they had. Anyway, she'd just paid for the dresses she was buying when she spotted something else she liked. I rolled my eyes and groaned. I was tired and disinterested in her shopping spree - so I went to sit in the car. Apparently after I left, the shop attendant said to Mum that I was huge and my birth was going to be a difficult one if I'm this big with 2 months left to go. Nice huh? At least she didn't say it to my face!<br><br>
I also get the 'gee- you're small and neat' comments on the same day as 'you've still got 2 months - woah, you're gonna be enourmous!'<br><br>
People are strange. And perhaps a bit silly.

I've got those comments too lately. Even the midwife today comment how much bigger I've gotten since I seen her a month ago. LOL Doesn't help that he is already head down and LOW! lol
