I've been eating peanut butter toast before my long runs (most recently 10 milers) 30-60 minutes before, needing a bit of food at mile 5-6. Lots of people eat Gus and similar things mid run, but they turn my stomach. I've been eating Trader Joe's "An apple walked into a bar" which are appley versions of fig newtons. They serve me really well.
