but my breasts won't be perky anymore...

craziest excuse ever in my book for not breastfeeding. it's probably a long shot that i could convince this particular woman to breastfeed. but where can i find a handout or something addressing the myth that your boobs change only because of breastfeeding.

i have tried the argument that her breasts are changed already (this woman is 40, breastfed an infant about 20 years ago and is now expecting number 2) due to pregnancy and that not breastfeeding won't help in any way.

any suggestions? (besides the obvious, who cares if it changes your boobs, your baby needs this!!!! argument)

thanks!

I might not be of much help, but I could try. I'm 22...I had my DD at the ripe old age of 20. I didn't breastfeed (and I TOTALLY regret it.....you can also tell her about the regret she may have!) and let me tell you, my boobs are about as saggy as a 50 year old woman who breastfed 6 kids! And I have...well, had time on my side! If a 20 year old's boobs are going to sag from being pregnant most certainly a 40 year old will too. So she may as well give her baby the great nutrition....she's losing her boobs either way. Thats just one way of looking at it.

I don't have the answers, but it seems interesting question or challenge. I think I've seen a thread around here somewhere about wearing bras causing the tendons or ligaments or whatever's in breasts to become weak?? and therefore sag... so really according to that theory then she shouldn't be wearing a bra either...

Oh LAWD - GRAVITY is what makes boobs sag, for goodness sake!!!! The body losing muscle tone & elasticity is what makes things sag. Which is what happens to *all* of us as we age. (Lots exercise can lessen the muscle tone loss, but it still happens).

And if you have pendulous boobs, they've already headed south, regardless of your age. Heck, mine have NEVER been "perky" & I'm in my mid 30's- that's why there's Wonderbra!

Perky breasts are for teenage girls... I never understand how this is a valid "reason" (lame excuse) not to breastfeed.

I would ask why her vanity is more important than her child's health.

BTW, pregnancy hormones haave a lot to do with the sagging, as does the stretching of skin when the breasts become engorged (when milk first comes in). So, like a pp said, if she's pregnant she's "doomed" to saggy breasts anyway.

Yep, I second the other replies. Its all about the pregnnacy mainly. My boobs laways get HUGE when I a, preggie so even if I didnt nurse, what fdo you think is gonna happen when I am done being preggie?????
Gotta let that dream die hun, tell her she can buy herself some wonderbras if she is that concerned. And anyway....my ta tas look best when I am nursing. Nothing liek boobs all full of milk. Its when my kids wean that they look lean. Id rather have nursing mama breats any day>
Lame excuse.

Hah! Like a previous poster said the damage is done.
Mine were a wonderful Vicky Secret C and then I got pregnant and they grew and grew and grew until I was an F! I figured I might as well use them if they were that serious.

Ahh, the mad science experiment that is pregnancy....

i just can't help thinking of how vain that sounds...lol....and a 40yo woman to boot...i mean i can see how a 20yo would be misguided about that, but like pp have said its a time/gravity thing and there are a whole lot more factors that play into saggy boobs than breastfeeding! i guess just make the points of lowering the risk of breastcancer (which you would think she would be more concerned about than saggy boobs) and the awesome nurishment she can provide for her dc...hth...

the greatest impact our our breasts sagging occurs in pregnancy - boobs get bigger while pregnant then go back - skin is stretched out already whether you nurse or not. I think that is a totally selfish reason not to bf, although after nursing my dd for 31 months mine are saggier. Is it from pregnancy or breastfeeding? dunno.

If her boobs are dense and perky then she should be fine.

Denseness seems to be the issue here and how much they grow in pregnancy and milk making. A friend of mine with an awesome pair of boobs never wore a bra with both her pregnancies (which she had in her 20s), nursed both boys and had still greats breasts at 38 when I saw them last LOL.

Besides, it's age and pregnancy that does it anyway, even if she doesn't nurse chances are that her boobs going to be stretched and once that happenes it's all genetics.

Tell your friend that if she is THAT serious about not wanting saggy boobs, she should bf her babe, then go have a boob job when she's done. I don't care that much about saggy boobs (mine have always been that way, anyway), but if she does, then she should at least make sure her desire for beauty doesn't interfere with her son's health and attachment.

Her boobs will end up looking like the boobs of the other women in her family, even if she never had any bf babies. Genetics, time and gravity... and while you are pg your body produces hormones that relax all your tissues, too, making them softer and looser. So she's gonna sag, might as well get some protection from breast cancer and give her babe the right food in the meantime.

One thing you can do - Get her to www.007b.com quick! It helped me a lot, it's a great antidote to the current unrealistic breast image that is so pervasive in our culture.
