Constant ravenous hunger

Anyone else having constant hunger? I swear I am eating! But it is non-stop...and so distracting. While I am at work, I feel like I cannot get anything done, I am in a daze, a bit pissy, and all i can think about is food. I am eating almonds and sunflower seeds by handful all morning long. Those are good sources of protein and calories, so I feel ok if I overload on those. Problem is that they are not cutting it!

I am already overweight (although a good 15 lbs less than when I first got pregnant with DS), so I would like to not to gain a whole bunch this first trimester. I am just 6w tomorrow, so I got to figure something out. I assume my body is trying to tell me I need to eat something else...and at the moment, a bacon cheeseburger sounds really, really good.

(And I am not even a big meat eater!)

Anyone else feeling ravenous?

I'm not ravenous yet (and believe me I will be!) but I do have to make sure I have a certain level of food in me at all times or else I get really really nauseous. I have to get used to eating a little bit all day long instead of going long periods of time between eating which is what I normally do. So, it's taking some time to readjust to that.

Hi earthwalker

(finally decided to join)...

I'm a big believer in following gut feelings and if you're desiring a bacon cheese burger, try to find a good one and go for it (or better still make it yourself so you know what's in there). It could be your body's way of telling you it needs protein, fat or probably iron.

With DD I had all of a sudden a huge urge for a garlicky lentil soup my mom used to make. I went with it and made a pot that lasted me several days. Later I found out by chance that lentils are an excellent source of folate and a good source of iron.

No ravenous hunger here yet, just nausea..

Hi LilyKay! So happy to see you here!

I agree with you about following cravings...and for something like a hamburger, I definitely wait until I can get my hands on a real good one. (We rarely have meat in our house, although that might have to change if these cravings keep up.) So this Friday, we are heading out of town, and one of the stops will be a yummy hamburger joint that serves locally-raised meats. YAY! My mouth is just salivating at the thought.

With DS, I craved a weekly burger...and mashed potatoes, and bacon and biscuits. I hope this time around I crave something healthy like lentils!

As for the ravenous hunger, I finally remembered that I need to eat more small meals (as I did with DS). Handful of almonds alone won't do it. But nuts with cheese and crackers at mid-morning will get me to lunch without losing my mind or hurting anyone.

I don't remember being hungry (or having any symptoms really) this early, but I definitely am this time. I get suddenly super hungry about three hours after whenever I last ate. And right at bedtime usually too. Inconvenient. So weird. All the things I read say there is no need for increased calories in the first trimester, but my body seems to disagree! I wonder if it is because my little one is still nursing a lot. Eat all the things. ;-)

I'm having the opposite problem. And it's not just nausea (though I'm having some of that); I'm just not hungry and I get full very easily. Yesterday I ate just a few pieces of fruit out of my fruit salad for breakfast, less than half a bowl of soup for lunch, and a quarter of my dinner at a restaurant where I usually eat a whole plate. After dinner, I was so uncomfortably full that I had to unbutton my pants as soon as we got in the car.

I realized last night that this has been going on for about a month. And here I thought I was getting better at eating reasonable portions, when really I was just pregnant. :p

I have been having the " must eat every three hours" hunger. I am definitely hungrier. I think I have been eating a bit more but so far no weight gain.

Well, my ravenous hunger has finally calmed down to super-duper hungry every 3 hours. Unfortunately, I am now feeling really nauseous mid-mornings and evenings. It is so hard to do anything when I feel that way -- I am a total zombie at work. I have yet to get sick, so counting my blessings!

I hear you, jopeters! I was being a bit optimistic about being hungry every 3 hours. Today I am back to hungry all the time, except when I am nauseous. I am on this merry-go-round of sick-hungry-sick-hungry. I am trying to figure out the best snacks to have at work. I already eat cheese, crackers, nuts, sunflower seeds, and snack bars. At lunch I eat lots of cheese and yogurt, too. So I am thinking I need to start bringing carrots, chick peas, apples, and maybe I can start making some healthy, nutty quick bread.

I need to figure something out, otherwise I am going to keep eating up all of my co-workers cookies...and I do not need to be eating cookies all day.

I put together a mixture of walnuts, almonds, and raisins and I eat a piece of fresh fruit like an apple, banana, or clementine with it to keep my hunger at bay. The walnuts are for their omega-3 fatty acids but it looks like they have other benefits in pregnancy http://www.vegan-momma.com/benefits-of-walnuts.html. The almonds have folic acid for our babies developing brains. Then the raisins have iron in them http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/top-10-iron-rich-foods My mom used to make sure she had lots of raisins and lentils before she would go in for her blood tests with the doctor so they wouldn't push some multivitamin on her. I prefer to eat real food to get my nutrients. I am an ovo-lacto vegetarian who tends toward eating less dairy.
