I play in a woman's league on Monday nights. It is really the only form of exercise I get right now (although I would like that to change...need to be in shape for my VBAC

. Since I found out I am pregnant I won't be doing anymore diving, but do you think I'm still putting the baby at risk in case I would crash into someone? It is not a real competitive league so no one is real hardcore. Thoughts?

I would. Just be careful. But then again, I'm not one who thinks being pregnant means I have to change my whole diet or avoid whole food groups or do much of anything different. Especially not during the first trimester or two. I'm still taking/teaching my tae kwon do class, though I did bow out of sparing the last time. But volleyball I'd still keep going. And if I was anywhere decent at snow boarding, I'd probably do that to. Now, would I take up snowboarding or volleyball right now? No, probably not

But if I'd been doing it for months/years? I don't see why I'd stop!!

THe only thing I'd say "be careful" about is your hydration. Make sure you're getting enough water while you exercise.

Until thirteen weeks, the baby is entirely behind your pelvic bone. In order for something to hurt the baby, it would have to break that bone. I cannot imagine that *any* volleyball team is pounding balls around that hard.

Even after thirteen weeks, mamas get hit in the belly by various things pretty often - flailing toddlers, trip and fall accidents - and the usual result of this is nothing. It's possible to beat a pregnant woman hard enough to induce miscarriage, but it's not easy. ANd while miscarriage is frightfully common, most miscarriages are not related to trauma.

We have a non-competetive volleyball team at our church, and I usually play on a team, but I did not this year. Mostly because of pregnancy symptoms, though...I was tired and nauseous all the time...and mostly because my boobs hurt and I have large breasts and sometimes there is just no avoiding them getting hit by the ball. I also tend to be rather clutzy and didn't want to risk an ankle sprain...those were my reasons...If I had felt fine at the beginning of my pregnancy, as long as the uterus was still down in the pelvis, yes would probably play. I have played softball and kickball while in the beginning of pregnancies before...

I wouldn't worry too much about playing. The baby is so small right now that getting hit in the stomach with a ball likely wouldn't do damage. A good friend of mine was in a major car accident in her first trimester (I think around 8 weeks or so) and they said this was the safest trimester to have trauma to the stomach because the baby was so small and protected in there. Her and the baby were fine. Just listen to your body and if you get overtired stop and rest.

Your right, I'll probably get hit by my flailing toddler a lot more

I think I'll keep playing through the season. Thanks ladies. It's good for me to get my exercise when I can.

I would still play, just be careful. I coached a volleyball team while pregnant with my last baby. I played a lot because of the teaching. I think the rule is if you did it before your pregnancy you can do it after. Of course, no diving.
