Looking for an alternative to Lotrimin

Hey There,

I've done a search, but still seek information.

I have a 6 month old with a "fungal infection" on his head. It originally looked like cradle cap, but now is formed in circles with raised, red edges and he scratches it as best his uncoordinated little arms can!

The ped recommended Lotrimin, but I would prefer to use a natural or homeopathic remedy before I go to a chemical medication.

Can anyone make a recommendation about a topical treatment and give me some guidance about what the course of treatment would be (how long, how much, yadda yadda).

Also, I am new to this board, so if you all could point in the direction of a great book or web resource for future issues of this nature, I would much appreciate it!

Thanks!

Try coconut oil. Just warm it up in your hands and rub it on baby's head. It has incredible antibacterial and antifungal properties. So far, I've used it to cure a yeast infection (mine), what I think was ringworm (fungal) on DS's bum and even I convinced my husband to use it for the jock itch (fungal) he picked up at the gym (ewwwww....).

Google it, there should be lots of information about how great it is!

i've read apple cider vinegar. that it even has worked when the meds didn't. please be aware however, that if it does not clear up with a natural treatment, the fungus can get into the hair shaft and topical meds will no longer work. hair loss can occur. it can be permanent in some rare cases. at that point, oral anti-fungals would be needed. they are pretty hardcore. my vet won't do them unless the animal is really super infested. and according to my research, this is the same med used on humans.

my cats have ringworm. one started. two weeks later the other came down. bad. now the other has it again. no humans yet, but i do have a toddler, so i am hyper aware. wash bedding and vac and all that. bedding is really important. do you have pets?
