I have been hearing recently and read brochures at the doctors and WIC that nursing laying down causes ear infections? They only mentioned bottles, but what's the deal with that?
I am assuming if it is true is only formula and not BFing. because there would be a whole latta babies with ear infections!
DD does have formula from time to time, she doesn't sleep unless she's actually getting something, so if she has emptied me, I have to give her a bottle or she just goes nuts. Should I not give the bottle to her laying down anymore? or is this just more bogus made up stuff?

I almost exclusively nurse DS lying down, and he has never had an ear infection.

I am sorry, I don't know about formula feeding. I wonder why it would make a difference, though. Possibly the "speed" at which formula is eaten compared to breast milk?

Yeah that just doesn't apply to breastfed babies. I guess breastmilk is just not prone to rotting in the eustachian tube or wherever it is that formula sits and rots into an infection.

All my babes have nursed laying down and none ever had ear infections. In fact the first ear infection ever in the family just happened over X-mas holidays- to my 8 year old who does NOT nurse and hasn't since he was 3!!!

it applies to bottles, not the breast.

when milk is removed from the breast, the nipple is deep down almost into the baby's throat and milk only comes out when baby is suckling.

bottles, on the other hand, will drip drip drip if they're on their side in a sleeping baby's mouth.

this is one reason why BF babies don't have to worry about tooth decay like bottle/formula babies either.

I have exclusively breastfed all 6 of my kids and no one has EVER EVER EVER had a single ear infection, in spite of a family history of ear infections and subsequent hearing loss (and not breastfeeding)

I wouldn't be concerned if you're exclusively breastfeeding.

it's also beacuse of the way their tubes are when their younge. they dont drain right. babies nursing laying down on their back like with bottles doesn't allow their ears to drain. Nursing on the other hand puts the baby on their side.
