Readiness to eat raw apple/carrot

DD loves blueberries and bananas and will eat them too. She has 4 top incisors, 2 bottom, with a 3rd one poking out yesterday.

She either pushes raw apples right back out or keeps them in her mouth. She eats apples cooked to soften, though not as much as for apple sauce. I've never given her raw carrot. If she can't eat apple, she certainly cannot eat carrot. But something I saw in a different thread about sensory something is prompting me to ask this question.

Also, when do their poops stop telling everyone what went in?

well DD is about 22 months and her poop looks like poop now. She cracks me up when she poops too because she gets quite red in the face sometimes...Ahh kids..

As far as apple, I knew DD was ready for regular apple when she grabbed a semi sweet apple off my mom's apple tree at about 18 months and started eating it in delight...

Now at 22 months she LOVES apple as a snack although I do slice it and take the skin off to make it easier for her.

Her issue, as with a lot of feed she eats is that she stuffs her face without swallowing until she has so much in cheek that she spits it out on the floor and calls the dog over to eat it, blech...So gross when it is half chewed meat that has been in her cheek for 20 minutes...

Anyway, she really likes apple and I still give it to her and just try to urge her to chew after each bite...Easier said than done..

Apple is way WAY softer than carrot though. DD can take a bite of carrot with ease but has a harder time chewing it I think.

I'm waiting for DS to get his molars before giving him raw apples. It's really hard to chew up anything w/only front teeth. If I'm not sure if DS will be able to chew it easily, I try it out using only my front teeth. It's a real eye opener. A lot of food, he can smash w/his gums but it really doesn't break the food up into smaller pieces...as evident in his diaper. LOL!

As for how long it will take until what goes in doesn't come out looking exactly the same....Not sure, DS is only 15 months old. When you find out, let me know..Kinda tired of looking at green beans and carrots ;)

My 14 month old has been eating tiny pieces of apple and pear for a while now. Sometimes he does have trouble finishing and swallowing it, sometimes not. When he eats grapes, he usually ends up not being able to deal with the skin so I give him a little graham cracker or goldfish to 'wash it down'. His premolars are just about all the way in now which makes chewing easier. He gnawed on a carrot for a while the other day, shredding pieces off and eating them. Then about halfway through [a baby carrot], he shoved the whole rest in his mouth and I had to 'retrieve' it.

I don't think there is a set time. My friend's DD has been eating raw carrots & apples since before I met her (when she was around 15mos old)... Most of our other 1-2yo friends seem to handle them fine as well. My DS is 26mos and can sometimes handle raw apple but pushes out raw carrot. But, he has a very effective push/gag reflex, so I just keep offering it and letting him spit it out in a napkin (or more often, my hand lol). He does seem to like tasting it and chewing it... just not swallowing it.

LOL I think I mentioned raw carrots in the high needs thread so maybe that was my post you read.

But I guess my point is that you can just try it and you'll know if she's ready... and even if she's not, that doesn't mean she can't keep trying it (well, unless you think she won't spit/gag it out & choke or something??)

Oh and I'm not sure about the poop thing, sometimes I still see pieces of food in it but usually not & I'd guess it shifted sometime around 18-20mos?? (DS was late on solids though so might be sooner for your DD!) I don't really look that carefully TBH & DH changes most of the diapers.

My dd could do raw apple from about a year (they're one of her favorites), but at 20 months, she's still far from being able to eat a raw carrot. We steam them, and they don't need to be as soft as they used to be, but totally crunchy she couldn't do at all, I'm sure.

Poop... sometimes I can still see things like beans or peas (tmi, sorry!), but it's usually "normal."

My 17.5 month old has been eating raw apples and carrots for a few months, but I cut them up. The apples I either slice into very thin slices or julienne into little sticks. The carrots I grate with a large-holed grater. She is just starting to get her first top molars now so lots of stuff still goes through without being chewed. I am seeing less of her food in her diaper now, so I think it's progress.

Ds2 is 14 months and has been getting apples for about 6 months. I just slice it and take off the skin. As for carrot, I just shred it up like I would for a salad. And only give him a little (cause he'll happily stuff it all in his mouth!)

ETA: And as for poop, some days I can tell what he ate, others I can't. And a lot of the time it depends on the food, not just the age. There are still some days when I can tell what my 4-year-old has eaten. Gross.

at the bolded! This is my 19mo ds, totally!

Anyway, I've been giving ds raw apples, sliced or whole, and baby carrots for months. He has his "one year molars" (bicuspids) but not the second set yet. He used to eat apples pretty well, but now he just chews them up and spits them out, usually while walking around the house. I am usually crouching down in the kitchen trying not to laugh out loud at the farting noises he makes as he spits apple everywhere. After cleaning it up so many times, I don't know why I still think it's funny. Anyway, he doesn't really eat either, but he doesn't choke on them, and he likes them, so if dd's having an apple and ds wants one, I let him have it.

I remember giving dd chunks of peeled raw apple to chew on before a year, maybe 9 or 10 months (she had 8 teeth by 8 months). She gagged on it a lot, but loved it.

Oh, and poop...well, you can still tell some things, like blueberry skins, black bean skins, etc. If he eats a lot of yams, it's gonna be orange, etc. But he is definitely digesting things more now than when he started solids (or at least chewing them more).
