I saw this the other day at the drugstore. The lovely sentiment on the package said something like, "Introduce baby to solids through familiar bottle feeding!!"

Uggh! I feel bad for the babies of all the ignorant people who will jump on this bandwagon and start feeding rice cereal to their two month old babies in an attempt to get them to sleep through the night.

 

"Baby Food Nurser Kit is designed to ease the transition from breast milk or formula to solid food."

Umm, how is taking my baby off the boob and putting a bottle food in her mouth making for an easy transition? What a load of hooey.

Yet another scary gimmick.

 

These have been around for years. They aren't anything new, are they? I remember watching my mom and aunt feed my cousin w/ one of those things, all types of baby foods.

 

Well, it DOES say "recommended for babies 6+ months".

It's pathetic, really, but at least they do put that on there. Not that a lot of people heed recommendations, but still.

 

A very old idea . . . my MIL was telling me how they used to cut more of the top off of the nipple to make a bigger hole so they could add rice cereal to it (at a ripe old age of one month old or something crazy like that).

When my ped told me we could start solids if we desired, he even made a point of saying NOT to do it with a bottle, so I guess a lot of people still do it.

 

They are often used for babies with severe reflux, or babies that have feeding problems, but it doesn't say that on the package. For a normal baby they are pretty useless.

 

When DD was old enough to be introduced to solids we were still on WIC. When we went in they said it was ok to start (we'd be getting cereal checks) but not to do it in a bottle. It's considered force feeding now and they have been having problems with it.

 

yep, thats been around for years. thats what the dr. told me to use to help my ds1 b/c i "didnt have enough breastmilk for him". needless to say, with the use of that thing at 3 months and supplementing with formula, he was totally weaned at 6 mo.

My mom used to poke a knitting needle through our bottle nipples, to make them big enough for pablum. It's not a new concept. But I still think it's stupid.

 

Wow, I feel priviledged to have never heard of this before. Lucky me. That's just disgusting.

I can't tell if it's the same product or not, but I saw something similar at wal-mart that had a lever-thingy on the side that you use to PUSH the food into the babies mouth.

 

The only mildly redeeming factor is that the website does say recommended for ages 6+ months. I see that as more of a CYA move though, if some 2 month old chokes on the bottle of cereal, they can say "we told you not to use it that young".

 

friend of mine used one for her 8 month old who hated the spoon but enjoyed solids. it really helped them. Unfortunatly Im surethere are uneducated parents out there using this for kids who arent ready for solids.

 

THE SASSY IS THE BEST CEREAL FEEDER EVER, I HAVE A BABY WITH HORRIBLE REFLUX AND ITNHAS HELPED A LOT. I NEVER USED THEM BEFORE, 5 YEARS AGO MY DOCTOR TOLD US NOT TO USE ANYTHING LIKE THAT WITH CEREAL IN A BOTTLE BUT WHEN SHE EXAMINED MY DOCTOR AND SEEN HOW SHE VOMITTED ALL HER FORMULA UP AFTER FEEDING SHE RECOMMENDED DOING IT. I HAD A HARD TIME FINDING THEM I TRIED THE NUBY ONES BUT THEY WERE A MESS THE SASSY IS WORKING GREAT.
