Turkey drumsticks?

There is a special on turkey drumsticks at the supermarket; 1.5 kg (over 3 pounds) for $5. By Nova Scotia standards, that's really cheap. I bought 2 packs, but is it worth going back and buying a whack of them for the freezer? I was reading that they are blander than chicken, but are they good? Does anyone cook with them regularly? Are they a good, economical meat?

I buy tons of them at Thanksgiving time for super cheap and stock up my freezer. My favorite way to eat them is to take the skin off, and cook them in the crockpot with a can of baked beans (or leftover homemade), chunks of sweet potato/yam, tomato sauce, brown sugar and a little bit of cloves.

The meat is really tender when it comes out of the crockpot and the flavors go really well together.

I've also baked them a few times also and taken the meat off the bones to use for turkey sandwiches, soups, etc. I don't think the flavor is bland compared to chicken, just different. If you like dark meat turkey then go for it. We love dark meat turkey at our house so it a cheap meat for us.

They are also good cooked in the crockpot with the usual turkey seasonings (garlic, sage, etc.) and some liquid smoke. Then you can either eat them plain if you like turkey a lot like my DP does, or shred the meat for use in other things (soups, collards

enchiladas, etc.)

OR you can oven roast them -- serve however, but use the drippings to make turkey gravy. One trick I really like is to do this before Thanksgiving, in order to have extra gravy on hand.

The cool thing about eating turkey legs is that you can pretend you are either a) at the Renaissance Fair; or b) Henry the Eighth.

Why not cook up one of the packs you have and see what you think, and then go back for more if you like them?

HTH.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Unfortunately (or fortunately), because of the pantry challenge I am doing, I really CANNOT cook anything else. We are already swimming in prepared food. So I have to just throw them in the freezer. But now I'm convinced. I think I am going to do the baked bean thing...no time to make homemade, because their best-before date is tomorrow, but if I used can beans, the whole pot can go in the freezer, if need be. I'm going back for more!

Yum!
I can't wait to try this!

Turkey legs also make great soup stocks that are high in minerals b/c of the big bones.
I throw in carrots, celery, onions, garlic, thyme, rosemary, sage, salt & pepper etc.
My fam loves turkey rice soup.
