I was reading the smart board thread and several people mentioned they work for a title 1 school. This probably sounds really dumb, but I didn't know there were schools that aren't title 1 schools. I thought they were just the name for tutors that helped out kids who needed more help reading and with math. My kids do not ever work with the title 1 tutors but they have brought home surveys about title 1 and I have always filled them out saying my kids don't participate in the program. But are they participating in other ways? What other things does title 1 cover besides the reading and math tutors?? I guess I need to pay more attention to our principal!

I believe a Title One school receives extra money from the federal government. The basis for qualifying is the percentage of students from low-income families: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Element..._Education_Act
I think there is some flexibility in how the extra money is spent so some schools may use the money to reduce class size, others may hire extra resource specialists (like reading specialists, etc).

Title One is determined by the percentage of students at the school who qualify for free or reduced lunch. The criteria (percentage) changed recently and a lot of schools lost that funding.
Our school has never been a Title One school, but was getting closer to the old percentage required and the principal was urging every family to apply for the free/reduced lunch program in hopes of discovering a few more eligible families to push us over the limit. We not only fell short, but that is the same time they raised the criteria and we'd never qualify now.

We do have quite a few free/reduced lunch students, somewhere around 40%. I guess I just always thought Title 1 was for all students needing extra help, not something that was based on the whole building population.
I'm going to see if I can figure out what the Title 1 funds are used for at our school. I'm pretty sure it's just for the extra reading and math tutors.
I went and checked and found out that 5/6 of our elementary schools and the middle school are title 1 schools. No wonder I thought that every school was a title 1 school.

Entire schools can be Title I schools, or schools can get Title I funds which are targeted to "at-risk" students. That's what the school I teach in gets.

About 25% of the schools in our entire school division are Title 1---but you would be surprised--Title 1 doesn't always equal low test scores. Some of our schools are making AYP and beyond and doing great! Also, not all the schools in our division are Title 1--in fact, most of the schools are NOT Title 1 and are in very exclusive communities.

I was listening to some friends of friends saying how when they were looking for a house, they knew they would end up in a good school district by looking for the one with the lowest free/reduced lunch population. I think it is a pretty widespread stereotype that a high free/reduced lunch population = a bad school, dumb kids and uninvolved parents. We do have our share of uninvolved parents but they sure aren't all from the free/reduced lunch group!

Our neighborhood school services the area around it. This is one of 6 elementary schools in the district and then a middle school 6-8. Ours is one of the smaller ones and is a title 1. The largest K-5th is also a title 1 and their low income population is close to 30%. Ours is right about 24%. We have about 50 students who would be considered by income standards (their parents tax filings) to be poverty level. But we also have 250 other students who are considered under the same measurement higher income.
There are many benefits to our school. Because its smaller and serves just the surronding neighborhood, the students and their families are pretty close and involved. Since there is a larger portion of higher income families, there are some more selective resources. But since we are a title 1, we have even more resources to make sure EVERY student has the opportunity to succeed.
