Why do YOU cloth diaper?

In response to Darshani's sticky in the S&T forum which says "Remember why we all cloth diaper." I wonder if everyone does it for the same reasons. I am finally moving to cloth now that we have moved into a home with a washer (vs. a fourth floor walkup in NYC).

My reasons are simple, but mostly environmental. I do think that it can be better for the earth. Especially if you line dry and use natural detergants.
Cloth is also a renewable resource, especially if you share or resell your old dipes.

I guess there is an economic factor too. In the end I hope to save money. Although I am not sure this is the case because we are probably through having babies and the little guy is already 8 months.

So why do *you* cloth?

Because I think they are darn cute. Seriously. I just love the look and feel of them.

I love that it's a renewable resource.

I love that it's better for the earth.

I love that they are better for my child's skin.

I just plain love them.

We've used cloth on all of our children, with different reasons each time. This time, it's for fun! LOL!

I use cloth because it is just so much fun! I love the way the diapers feel when they are still warm from the dryer. I love not having to buy disposables. Plus, it makes my friends think of me as being a bit eccentric

(though i also know they all wish they could do it too)

1) Health. When I found those gel things on my first babies' genitals I researched cloth diapers and gave them a whirl. I believe natural fibers are better for my baby, and more comfortable, soft and absorbent.

2) I don't want to add even one more disposable diaper to the eternal landfill if I can at all help it.

3) Convenience. I never run out of them, I can simply do a load of wash if I'm not caught up, but usually I am. Plus, they work better, far fewer leaks and problems than when we used throw away diapers.

4) There are a variety of choices for cloth diapering out there and they make a necessary task a bit brighter and more fun for me.

nak (it's late she's teething....)

because im not putting more crap- literally- in any landfills. I'm sure we're not saving money since we started so late but it makes me feel good that everything we put on her little bum these days is natural and good for her.

because now i have some really wonderful and one of a kind heirlooms for her.

And because its FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have posted this list here before

Ok....here are my reasons.

We use cloth diapers and cloth wet wipes. I also use mama cloth for my menstrual cycle and pp bleeding.

Here it goes in no particular order.... :

1. To keep as many chemicals off of my baby's body as I can.

2. Never having to make a midnight run to the grocery store because we ran out of sposies.

3. Ease of use. Even my son Dominick who just turned 6 can cloth diaper his brother by himself.

4. To support work at home mothers (WAHM's) be with there children at home.

5. Not giving money to large corporations whose ethics and policies I disagree with.

6. The ability to customize each diaper to met our needs. (Ex: If he is teething....I use wool to ensure he doesn't get pink)

7. No rashes. Ds1 and dd had BAD rashes from sposies. Procter & Gamble's own study showed that diaper rash increases from 7.1 % to 61% with use of disposable diapers. ("A review of Proctor and Gamble's Environmental Balances for Disposable and Re-usable Nappies" The Landbank Consultancy Limited, 1991)

8. Cloth diapering mamas.....I have met some of the most caring, loving, and generous mamas as a result of me getting involved in cloth diapering. Some who even helped me set up a stash for my son when we had no money, no car, and almost no Christmas.

9. Knowing that I am no longer contributing to overfilling landfills in which each disposable diaper will take 500 years to break down. Cloth diapers take about 6 months.

10. All of the water that I am using to wash/flush waste is going to a treatment plant to be cleaned. Landfill run off contaminated by human waste does not.

11. They are soooooooo cute!!!

12. Resale value......you can resell diapers after using them for ALL of your children and STILL get money for them. You can't do that with sposies!

13. Cost per changing is significantly lower for cloth. (This is what dh likes! )

14. The sense of community I have found with other cloth diapering mamas on line and in real life. I so enjoy talking cloth with them!

15. Ability to reuse my diaper stash on babies yet to come.

16. Comfortable.....I have switched to all cloth mama products. I can not believe the difference it has made. I bleed less and cramp less. I don't have a study to prove that......but my woman parts don't need a study to know it just feels better!

17. Washing my diapers is fun! It is not gross at all. I love folding clean fluff!

18. I now have WAY less laundry to do. When I used sposies I wash at least a load a day of baby clothes and/or bedding from blow outs and leaks. I now wash only 2-3 loads of dipes a week.

19. The thought of my baby's bum (or my own for that matter) in paper all day grosses me out.

20. I love matching each diaper to what Angelo is wearing that day. :

21. We can even celebrate seasons and holidays by decorating his bum! I LOVE the holiday themed dipes and covers. SO YUMMY!

22. Softness.....I read that babies spend an average of 20,000 hours in diapers. I want him to be as comfy as possible during those 20,000 hours.

23. I am able to chose all renewable resources such as cotton, hemp, and wool....instead of man-made plastics and chemicals.

24. Less trash going out of our house each week. We barely have 2 bags of trash with a family of 3 adults, 3 children, and 2 pets (My sister lives with us)

25. Way less leaks.

26. If you try a cloth diaper or cover and don't care for it.......sell it and get your money back!

27. You can buy used cloth diapers/covers and save even MORE MONEY!!!

28. I love the way a baby looks in a cloth diaper. Too cute!!!

29. I love supporting small businesses.

30. I love supporting local businesses.

31. I love supporting family owned businesses.

32. Myself and my children have extremely sensative skin. We can not have perfumes, dyes, bleach, or chemicals on our skin.

33. Using cloth diapers is recycling at it's best! You can even make cloth diapers out of old clothes such as wool sweaters, Tshirts, and old terry towels.

34. Spirit of sharing...I have two other babies wearing some of our cloth diapers. This next week 2 more will be given a part of our stash for there babies as they can not afford diapers right now. Spreading the cloth love!

35. They have sooooo much personality! Angelo LOVES trucks, so we got him a truck diaper. Too sweet! I love how we can incorporate our families likes into our cloth diaper collection.

36. We have cloth diapering items that my children will be able to use with thei own children someday.

37. I have been on a week long family vacation using only cloth diapers. Not a problem

38. No stinky pail. When I used sposies....my diaper genie REAKED!!!

39. I actually ENJOY changin diapers now that I am using cloth.

40. I was in shock when I realized that we had spent nearly $6,000 to diaper our first two children. We were struggling financially during this time as well. Boy......what we could have done with that $6,000.

41. No dioxins

42. No sodium polyacraylate (gel in sposies...looks like little beads)

43. No organoclorines

44. No polyvivylcloride (PVC) that outgases vinyl chloride

45. Easier to tell if baby is taking in enough breastmilk in the first couple of weeks.

46. Baby has a better sense of wet and dry which makes potty learning easier.

47. I love the fact that cloth makes it possible for a family to diaper ALL of their babies for around $200 dollars from birth to potty learning if they want to. Talk about a good investment!

48. Adds a little "cushion" to the bum for new walkers.

49. Because now days.....it makes me different

50. I feel wasteful using things once and then trowing them away.

Most of all.........I just love it! It has become a hobby for me. I am greatful that I found cloth diapering when pregnant with Angelo. It is nothing like it was when my mom cloth diapered myself and my siblings. It is easy. It is fun. It is economical. It is great!

I started to save money. I've only spend $100 in 5 months of diapering, so I feel like that's pretty good! Now I don't like disposables at all. DD always has blowouts whenever I put them on her and I don't like the feel of them. I didn't know I would like cloth so much, but I love the look and feel of them on her. I also like the fact that I dont' have to run to the store to buy diapers!

I have two basic reasons:

1) I'm cheap

2) It's what I'm used to

While I think the enviro stuff and the no weird chemicals stuff are nice side benefits, they're not a real motivation for me.

I also enjoy that they're cute, I enjoy never having to buy diapers (or run out- while we launder every 2-3 days, we could technically go 5 or 6 days or more. If we got out all the prefolds and fitteds). I like feeling like I'm buying something when I buy a diaper, instead of buying something that will get throwed away soon enough.

And they're pretty. I'm such a sucker for the pretty diapers.

1) baby's health

2) baby's comfort

3) better for the environment

We use cloth for a couple reasons. Health - the girls never did well in sposies, both reacted badly to them. <as do I as it turns out, but that's another forum

) It was also to save money and less waste on the curb. I don't mind laundry, I admit to even being fond of it

For me it started out because of their re-usability, and then it evolved into other things also, like health, saving money. The environmental aspect is still up there. What I LOVE about CDs, is that I NEVER EVER run out of diapers! I can't imagine if I had to drive to the store this time of year when it's cold, and bad driving conditions, because I "HAVE TO" buy a bag of diapers.

#15 ·
I first started CDing because it was frugal, and continued because it was easier than I thought. I also have two kids with allerigies and easily flared eczema so no chemicals on their sensitive skin is a huge bonus. I also love that I'm doing my small part to be good to the Earth.

I started for environmental reasons. I also believed that cloth was better for my baby's skin and health. I also actually enjoyed washing and drying them

Haha, I'm cheap too - the idea of spending money on something that is literally getting thrown right in the garbage so soon just makes me sad!

However, the other perks like no chemicals and no gigantic bags of diaper garbage are nice too, and also for me -

no bleeding butt rash for toddler ds (we tried commercial pull-ups for a bit when he started daycare, but ouch, his poor behind!)

cloth wipes work better than paper ones and now I think they're actually easier - dump 'em in the bucket with the diaper!

the brand new baby is a *girl* so I can get/make her all kinds of ridiculous and cute diapers, so much fun, haha!

and.... after since this is the LAST baby, after she is all done using those ridiculous and cute diapers, I can trade them or sell them! Yay!

1. Hate the idea of having chemicals next to my dd's skin and thinking about what they might be doing to her.
2.Saving money (not yet, but maybe with the next baby?)
3.Doing a little bit to help the environment
4. NO BLOWOUTS!!! I didn't even know about this one till I started CDing. I had previously worked in a daycare infant room where all the babies were in disposables and we had about 1-2 blowouts a week. I just thought it was normal. The ONLY blowout dd has EVER had was in a disposable. We sometimes get leaks but I'd much prefer changing wet clothes than poopy clothes. I

It started as a way to save money and better for the environment and my buddy's health. Now it's because I

it! Everytime we've gone out of town for a long period of time, been in the car for a 20+hr trip, I've briefly considered using sposies to be "easy", but then quickly figure out I can buy a great fitted or 2 off the TP or a doz. prefolds for the amount of money I'd spend on a pkg. of stinky no good spoises that I'd throw away. No way will I ever use sposies again...and I really hope that we have at least one more babe, so all of these diapers will get even more use!

1. Better for my baby's skin.
2. Less $$ overall - we use store brand disposables for night-time diapering and a really small stash of pf's and AIO's/fitteds for daytime use.
3. We EC, so disposables really don't make sense. I change at every wet or poop, so sposies would get ridiculously expensive.
4. Cloth wipes as well, so no funny smelling disposable wipes in the garbage.
