River had a head circumference of 16" at 6 weeks, which was on the 75th centile so many babies will be somewhat smaller. BUT brand new babies tend to have smaller heads because of the mouldings. It depends if you want something tiny and perfect that fits right away, or something she'll grow into. (I favour shopbought cotton ones for tiny and perfect, and growing room in handknits)

perfect! i made this one about 14"....should fit(ish) as a newbie and stretch a bit as Poppy grows. Any idea on how tall I should make it? This is the problem when you fly off without a pattern....

I'm using scraps from a sweater - so it's 4ply cashmerino. soooo soft!

 

I usually go 14-15 inches. that will be big on newborn (14" seems average) but will stretch to fit for quite a while.

 

Yep, 14 - 15 inches is what I do also.

 

Another vote for 14-15 here.

 

I haven't done a straight hat this time round, but I think you're looking at 4" and then slow decreases...

 

Yep . . . good advice so far. I usually knit a 14.5 inch circumference, and a 1inch ribbed brim then 4 inches from cast on I begin the quick decreases.

Quick (another) question - as I knit my hats hands down, by quick decreases do you mean decreasing every row, or every other row?

 

I decrease every other row, then knit a row . . . it looks nicer that way IMHO.

14" circumference, somewhere between 5" & 6" inches in overall length, depending on how rolled up the brim is.
