I know this is a strange question, but being out of state and not a home owner I am at a loss! My mom is trying to get her mom's house painted (in Bandon OR)

It hasn't been painted in possibly 7+ years so will need "the works" (which i presume to mean stripped, sealed and painted)

It's about 4000sf and all made with good quality materials by my grandfather-- a local painter that has done roof work for them has quoted her $8000. Does this sound normal?!?!? Sounds crazy to me!

Thanks!

My husband seems to think that the estimate sounds a bit excessive. However, it does matter how many stories the house is, if the paint is included, if the painter is using a spray gun to paint, or a brush, what kind of material the siding is etc. There are a few painters in Bandon whom you could get estimates from.

We know someone who would do an honest job for you, if you'd like an estimate from them.

Good luck.

My husband is a painter and does bids all over Oregon. He says that it depends on the difficulty of the exterior, if it has decks, is on a cliff, is multiple stories, right on the beach, etc. For a typical house exterior that was 7 years old, he would bid $1 to $1.50 a square foot. That is if it only needed a small amount scraped and then the whole house painted (which after 7 years should be sufficient for most houses). He said that if the whole house truly needs to be completely stripped, $8000 seems low, as stripping is extremely time consuming.
