What's the difference between a flat and a prefold? I have a 10 week old pushing 15 lbs already and wanted to get some basic dipes for when he goes to grandma's. (she's good at folding them) Should I get flat or prefolds? Also can anyone recommend Chinese, Indian, etc.? There are so many to choose from! Any experience w/dyed? I appreciate any information you have - or if you can point me to a site or thread that explains it all too that would be good. Thanks! I already have covers because of my fitted dipes.

That's funny - I prefer Indian and have had more pilling with CPFs!

Flats can come in any fabric from gauze to terry. Also in different size and shapes. There are squares and rectangles 18, 24, 27, 30, 36" square usually. Oblongs are like 21x40.

If folding isn't an issue you might want to get some flats for gma because they really are much more versatile. Ask grandma though. She may have a preference and want you to get something similar to what she's used in the past.

I love both, but for different reasons. I find both to be simple, but there are times I simply don't have the time to do the oragami fold while K is wiggling around the changing area. And while I'm not an aplix fan, sometimes the easiest darn thing is tri-folding a prefold into a bummis wrap and just sticking it on. Doesnt' get easier than that.

Flats are very versatile and you can use a fold that perfectly suits whatever purpose you're going for (holding in poo, getting more absorbancy for a boy/girl, etc). But, pfs have minimal folding requirements and sometimes are quicker (unless you keep a stack of pre-folded flats!).

Ah.. there's reasons for both. You might want to check to see just how much folding grandma is prepared to do. For sheer simplicity, prefolds are simpler. For an easy check, dig out a receiving blanket... or cut up a 27x27 piece of fabric. See if she wants to fold it or even how she folds it. This could help with your (and her!) decision!
