How can I change ds's sleep patterns?

Ds always wakes up between 8 and 9, no matter how early or late he goes to bed. HIm waking up so late means that he isn't ready to nap until late. I aim to have him asleep for his nap by 2, but sometimes it is later. So then it is hard to get him to sleep before 9 or 10, sometimes later.

I would like him to have an earlier bedtime, but am struggling with how to do so. Whenever I get him to bed early, he still sleeps in, so then we are still stuck with him not being ready for a nap until late in the day.

What I am wondering is, what is the best way to change ds sleep patterns so that he is going to bed earlier? My only thought is to start waking him earlier, but I hate waking up sleeping babies/children. And it seems to be his natural wake up time since he always wakes up at the same time.

Is there anything else I can do to establish an earlier bedtime with him?

My dd is younger than yours (13mo), but I changed her sleep pattern by waking her up earlier. I also HATE to wake a sleeping child, but what I did was set the clock radio to play some music about 15 minutes before her normal wake-up time. The next morning I did it 30min. before her wake-up time, and so on. Ultimately, I changed her wake-up from 10am to 7am, and it adjusted her bedtime from 12am to 8pm. I didn't have to do anything else--just adjusting the wake-up switched her nap and her bedtime.

Good luck!

My DS's sleep patterns shifted when I went back to work. I guess me getting out of bed and moving around the room was enough to wake him up earlier and then he would tire earlier in the evening. Maybe just making more noise in the am might be enough to "naturally" wake him up to start his day.
