You might do best with the Eyewitness books or Usborne guides rather than an encyclopedia for someone so young. We check them out from the library all the time and browse through them.

After that, I say build a collection of encyclopedias - a history one, a science one, a math one...before getting the Brittanicas.

 

Whatever's on sale at the library book sale. Then use that to refine your ideas on anything you purchase new.

i know you're looking for an online version, but if i were to buy a set, i would purchase childcraft encyclopedias. they look so wonderful to me!

 

We really like the Visual Dictionary by DK. Lots of labeled pictures with snippets of detail.
