Any one heard of this?? The reason behind it??

I have an 11mo DS and never heard of this. My sister is now preg & this is what a friend told her. Is this something new or what??

Green tea has some caffeine in it, so if you're avoiding that I guess it would make sense. The evidence is that caffeine is fine, unless you're really overdoing it.

A quick google did find this http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/1-24-2006-87222.asp, which explains that green tea molecules have a similar structure to methotrexate, which is used to induce abortion. But really--you'd need to be drinking a crazy amount of green tea to have any effect.

Chamomile is a mild uterine stimulant, so one should avoid the concentrated versions (oils etc). But an occasional cup of tea...I wouldn't worry about it.

If you have a history of miscarriages, and are early in your pregnancy, you might avoid these as you avoid other stuff. But later on, in a healthy pregnancy, I'd feel comfortable having both of these on occasion.

I've heard that green tea can thin out the uterus, and chamomile can induce miscarriages if you are sensitive to one of the chemicals in it. I am sensitive to chamomile, but have taken a few cups of tea in the third trimester with no ill effects.

I've been drinking chamomile tea weekly through the pregnancy...never heard not to. I have to avoid red raspberry leaf though b/c that definitely stimulates contractions for me.

Hi all!
This is my first post. I just got a positive test this weekend and am also trying to figure out the best thing in regards to green tea. I found this link on the whole foods website, which says the anti-oxidants found in green tea (ECGC's) can inhibit the absorption of folate in the body, so mothers who drink alot of green tea in the first trimester are at a higher risk for neural tube defects. They do say that 1 or 2 cups a day shouldn't pose a problem, but I have yet to have a cup since reading this.

Very happy to be here now with all of you - what a great resource!

I have been drinking some Green tead this pregnancy with no issues but I have it maybe once a week at the most.

Chamomille Tea is normally not an issue, but I found that it aggravated my allergies. I am allergic to the dry flowers externally mildly but this is a new thing for me to have issues taking it internally.

This is exactly what my baby book "From the Hips" says about green tea. I'm opting to stay away from it.

Like Raene, red rasberry leaf tea and I don't get along, but I didn't have any side effects from green of chamomile in my last pregnancy (or this one so far). Obviously, water is safest and I doubt many people drink enough of any kind of tea to make a difference, so I'm not worrying.
