Stinky Fuzzi Bunz, Need Advice

I hope you guys can advise us because DH & I know of no other CDers. Isn't that amazing?

DS is 22mo & largely uses Fuzzies with a thick terry insert. In the past six months or so we've noticed that even when we soak/wash, the dipes still smell pishy. Are we doing something wrong? DS is a heavy wetter--day & night, but even with just a little pee, the dipes still smell SUPER pishy.

Maybe it's just DS

(no, we do not feed him a daily diet of asparagus!), but...in case it's our washing or the FBs or the inserts... I thought someone out there might have some wisdom for us.

Our washing habits:
Every other day or so (rarely less):
Cold soak cycle
Warm regular cycle with a little gentle soap.
Dryer

Thanks for any advice!

Sounds like you need to strip the diapers. I know ours get funky when they get a soap buildup - it has something to do with the ph level of our well water. So even though I use very little soap, they still get a buildup.

The most-effective means of stripping without adding anything else to your wash is to boil the diapers.

Or, you can try this method:

Put a few drops (literally, just a drop or three) of regular dawn dish detergent in with your cold soak, and do a full cold wash. Then wash on hot until there are no visible suds in the wash. This could take two or three washes.

For extra good measures, let them dry in the sun, fuzzi side up.

Good luck! I hope this helps. I've had to strip each size we've gone through at least once.

To keep them smelling fresh, I also add a small scoop of baking soda to my cold rinse.

when i stripped my dipes ( a combination of types but it was the fuzzy stink that got to me

) it took at least five hot washes with no detergent and i ended up washing them once more on a regular (cold wash, hot wash w/ less detergent, warm rinse) wash cycle.

some of my inserts were in the washer through yet more laundry loads even after all that. and two of them i threw away.

to be fair though, i got mine used aand while thye were clean when i got them i don't know tat theyd been stripped recently and they were VERY used.

just t let you know it can take quite a few washes to really strip them good.

after my last hot wash i sniffed each dipe, wipe, and insert individually before puting it in the dryer.

good luck!

I had tried eveything to rid the smell of my fb and inserts and nothing worked (not even washing clean/freshly stripped diapers on my sanitation cycle TWICE), so , as a last resort, I used a very small amount of bleach. It worked! No more smell!! I guess my issue wasn't buildup after all, it was bacteria.

A very hot wash with oxyclean would probably kill bacteria too. The occasional hot, hot oxyclean wash has kept my diapers stink free for a long time. I would try just treating the inserts first, as that's where the bacteria is most likely to build up.

Sorry to highjack. I'm just starting to have a stink problem also. How much oxyclean do you use?

Thanks,
Mary

Is it okay to use baking soda to the soak? When you say soak, you mean the prewash in cold right? How much baking soda, and how much vinegar? I hate the smell of vinegar though, does it rinse clean?

So stripping means just to wash them with no soap a couple times?

Is bleach an acceptable thing to try-- perhaps only to the inserts?

Ours aren't too bad, but I have been noticing the beginning of a smell and I would rather not let it accumulate.

Oh and I use Charlie's Soap, not quite a tablespoon (doesn't seem like much but it is a small load, should I be using less?) I wash them daily because we don't own as many as I'd like....
