strep throat

dd(10) is at home again today with a very sore throat, upset tummy and sore neck. Strep throat has been going around the school she goes to and she has had a lot of sugar on the weekend leading up to her getting sick. Which I assume made her suseptible to illness. She has no fever. (highest reading I got was 37.4)

does this sound like strep throat? Does she need to be treated with antibiotics?

It never hurts to get a strep test. Most dr. offices will do them without an appoitment. Call first.

Last time my Dd had strep, she barely had a fever and it was off and on, but it went on for DAYS and her sister had strep, so I had her tested too. Once she was on anti-biotics for 24 hours she felt fine.

I feel bad that I let her be as miserable as she was for a long as I did before getting the test.

It is a good idea to get antibiotics for strep. In some cases, strep can lead to complications-- like infections in other part of the body, or rheumatic fever. Swollen neck glands in conjunction with a very sore throat, without obvious cold symptoms like a stuffy nose or cough, is way strep throat usually looks.

I've read some evidence suggesting that the incidence of strep complications is low in healthy adults, and that perhaps adults can forgo antibiotics to treat strep in some cases. But I've never heard or read anything about children that suggests that it's a good plan to forgo the antibiotics.

The journal article I found that laid this out is one you have to pay to read. But I'd be happy to link to it if you'd like.

I would go get a strep test. Then you know for sure.

Strep is extremely painful. Ds and I both had it twice last year (we'd just moved. New place, new germs, and it was right in the beginning of the school year, so everyone was sharing those germs), and I'd never had such awful throat pain. It felt like knives in my throat each time I swallowed. Ds also ended up with bronchitis, thanks to his asthma (every time he gets sick, no matter what it is, it goes straight to his lungs). But 24 hours after starting antibiotics, I felt completely normal. No throat pain, no aches from the fever, etc.

Strep really isn't something to mess around with, and it's definitely something you need to treat quickly, in order to spare your daughter the discomfort. I hope she feels better soon!
