Treating Giardia?

I have yet to get the lab work (collecting a stool sample tomorrow and giving it to our family dr for analysis) but I suspect my family (me, my 5yo, 2yo and maybe 7yo) may have giardia. I'm confused about how serious it is (assuming that is the problem) and by the sounds of it, the antibiotic treatment for it is pretty harsh. It sounds like our Dr is very concerned and would like to treat us all agressively if giardia is confirmed. I'm interested in experience, opinions on risks/benefits of treatment and especially natural treatments and if they work.... Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated. I'd really like to be armed with information when/if we get the diagnosis.
TIA

How long have you all been sick?

Giardia is usually self limiting (goes away on it's own) unless you're dealing with immune system issues. My son has had struggles with chronic parasites. Flagyl and flagyl combinations are really hard to handle side effects wise. There are other options though that are a breeze (really). But I sort of doubt you need them as most people are going to handle Giardia fine.

I'm pretty sure (although it was never confirmed with lab tests) our familiy has had giardia a few times. We treated it with raw garlic taken multiple times a day for about a week. The more the better. Avoid fatty foods and sugar as much as possible too.

I chop up the garlic in small pill size pieces and swallow with juice or chop it up fine and put it in empty pill capsules.

For the kids its a bit harder. I've mixed it in with cream cheese and put it on a cracker and encouraged them to eat it fast (without telling them it has garlic mixed in) and giving them something to drink as soon as they start chewing. I've also put it in a spoon of honey and then had them chug some juice afterwards. (yes that means they got a lot of sugar but the garlic is more important and if it takes some sugar to get them to take the garlic its okay)

Taking a good probiotic and lots of fiber is also important during treatment.

If you do take the antibiotics they give for sure follow up with a good probiotic!

As far as the body just fighting it naturally. . . I think most people probably can but it really can be miserable with that upset stomach, constant bathroom visits, and absolutely foul tasting/smelling belches. We can knock the symptoms the day we notice them now that we know how to treat it. I would hate to just let this nasty parasite run its course (which could take weeks for some) when garlic is such and easy and inexpensive cure.

Just make sure you don't stop the garlic and probiotics as soon as symptoms go away or you won't get all the parasites killed and a couple weeks later they will multiply and the problem will return. Keep treating for about a week.
