What are vegetables?

Okay, I'm thinking I'm dong so good, getting at least 5 servings a day, and then hubby throws me a curve ball. He tells me that a lot of the veggies I thought were veggies are actually fruits!! Like avocados, tomatoes and olives! Is he right? He said if they have a pit, its a fruit. So I'm eating like 14 servings of fruits a day :LOL

How about onions and garlic, do they count as veggies? How about sea vegetables? What are mushrooms? Are they just a fungus? Soy is a legume, so its not a veggie, right?

Luckily I eat a lot of kale and lately sweet potatoes like they are going out of style

I had some broccoli today w/a miso-tahinni dip

and red peppers. But I need more veggie ideas I guess if hubby is right.

Someone set me straight please!

he is technically right, but i don't think that what the "5 a day" program is all about. i think they count the things we usually think of as veggies as veggies. technically a fruit is anything that is produced from the blossom of a plant so tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, as well as apples, oranges, pears, etc are all fruits. personally, if you're eating plenty of tomatoes and kale and all that other good stuff i think you're doing great. my hubby tells me not to obsess over food so much (what's good, what's bad) 'cause all my worrying is taking more years off my life than if i just ate the thing i'm fretting about! :LOL

I believe you're supposed to get 5 fruits OR veggie servings per day. Although the truth of the matter is that 10 is more accurate, but the people who discovered it didn't think the public could handle the truth about 10 so they suggested 5. Don't ask me for my source, it's been too long since I heard it, and I don't really care per se. I say as many servings as you can get makes you healthier and healthier.

Yes, tomatoes, avocados, and a few other things are technically fruits.

Veggies are like broccoli, spinach, kale, carrots, zucchini, yellow squash, and the like.

I wouldn't worry so much about whether the plants you eat are fruits or veggies or whatever. Just make sure to get a variety of types as well as color. Anything dark green is super nutritious, as well as orange/yellow/red.

Thanks so much. I do eat a variety and I know my diet is top notch, mostly because of all of Aidan's allergies, which on the fruit/veggie side include: corn, carrots, parsnips, peas, and strawberries. Having Aidan be allergic to everything has forced me to have a very dramatic diet and life change.
